Black and blue (and brass): 2014’s edgy color combo

Annie Elliott | January 18, 2014

Remember how I said that a bossy color goal for 2014 was to use ever-edgier color combinations? And I mentioned black and blue as one of those combos? Well, I’ve decided that this particular color pairing is worthy of more attention. Turns out I started using black and blue together last year without really registering …

Jasper the puppy, just in time for Christmas

Annie Elliott | December 18, 2013

I was going to write about guest rooms. You know: how to make your holiday visitors feel extra welcome? But then I realized that a blog post like that would result in a big fat TO DO list. (Is there a trash can in there? I should get a docking station. We need little travel-sized …

The news is out: Pantone’s color of the year for 2014 is 18-3224, Radiant Orchid. UGH. Now, you may be thinking, “Hold it right there, missy! Mere weeks ago you were telling us about your new-found acceptance of purple. Are you backpedaling? Are you now against it after being for it, or whatever?” NO, Gentle …

Happy Thanksgiving! Super simple recipe for corn pudding

Annie Elliott | November 26, 2013

I know it’s not very interior design-y of me, but in honor of Thanksgiving, I thought I’d channel my inner Nigella Lawson and share one of my favorite holiday recipes with you: corn pudding. It’s also known as “creamed corn,” if you’re honoring your midwestern roots; my mom’s from Minnesota. Many years back, though, I took …

Now that’s bossy! Alessandra Branca for Schumacher

Annie Elliott | November 19, 2013

Our window treatment fabricator said to us recently, “It’s so fun to work on your projects — you guys use the best fabrics!” High praise from someone who works with fabric day in and day out, wouldn’t you say? She’s responding, of course, to “the bossy.” We’re always looking for our next bossy inspiration…the bold, …

Bicycle storage in the big city: one enthusiast’s solution

Annie Elliott | November 12, 2013

Question: What do you do when you have, oh…five…maybe six gorgeous, European-made racing bicycles scattered throughout your condominium? Answer: Call bossy color, of course. The bicycles are not why this fantastic client called us, but we knew right away that figuring out what to do with them needed to be part of our design strategy. …

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! Let’s talk about Cole & Son’s Acquario, shall we?Iconic Italian artist Piero Fornasetti designed Acquario for Cole & Son in the early 2010s. He was going through an ocean phase, captivated by its mysterious depths 🐠, so he developed this fish design and put it first on plates and fabrics, and then, luckily for us, on wallpaper. We just installed Acquario in the Print Room Blue colorway in a client’s tiny practice room (he plays classical guitar), and we LOVE it! That big old blowfish, just gliding along…he kills me.Featuring: @cole_and_son_wallpapers @fornasetti

Get ready for a dramatic before and after! We transformed a playroom into a dining room, and the result is pretty amazing. (But still fun!) #wallpaper #interiordesign #diningroominspo

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss the chinoiserie wallpaper in the Great Hall at @citytavern_dc in Washington, DC. Ooooohh - field trip!I was delighted to visit City Tavern recently. It’s a historic 1796 Federal building in the heart of Georgetown, and all the cool kids hung out there. You know, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson…those guys. At one point, the building boasted the largest room in Washington.I, of course, was captivated by the Great Hall, which is covered in @graciestudio hand-painted wallpaper — which was selected by none other than Jackie Kennedy! EVEN THOUGH at that time the building was a club that didn’t admit women. Harumph. The chinoiserie walls are gorgeous from far away, but they’re amazing up close, also: you can see faint brushstrokes left by the painters. Doesn’t that give you a shiver? I love it.

Happy Independence Day! I happen to love a room decorated in red, white, and blue. It’s not always gimmicky; wouldn’t you agree that the dining room below is bold and sophisticated? 🤪 My advice: vary the shades (clash those blues if you have to!), throw some large-scale patterns into the mix, and add texture. A grasscloth ceiling, for example 😉 Have a great 4th, everyone!#interiordesign #homedecor #pattermixing

I was honored to co-chair — with the inimitable @ianthainteriors — the design competition, America at 250: The New Look of American Design, a project conceived by the nonprofit MADE: In America.Design students from Howard University partnered with Washington Design Center showrooms to create storyboards and vignettes reflecting their vision of “American style.” The Design Center is showcasing the students’ work through July 10; admission is free and open to the public. Details may be found at the link in the @washingtondesigncenter’s bio.I encourage you to visit! It’s so important to support the next generation of designers, and I was delighted to participate in this event. Iantha and I are grateful to James De Lorbe, Chairman of MADE: In America; and we extend our warmest thanks to jurors @melissacolganinteriors, @mariella.cruzado, @gaildavisdesigns, @val_hawkins_architect, @hadleykeller, @byronrisdon, and @jazmynedesignstudio.
