Accent wall update! New trends in accent walls

Annie Elliott | February 13, 2013

Like stainless steel appliances, painted accent walls are here to stay. Fascinatingly, after more than five — count ’em: 5! — years of blogging, “The Accent Wall: Friend or Foe?“ remains one of my most-read posts. Can you believe it? I’ll be honest: I still have mixed feelings. But there are several trends in accent walls that give me …

The hippest nursery: black and white, not shades of gray

Annie Elliott | February 5, 2013

Have you noticed that GRAY is the in color for nurseries these days? Yep. If you’re preoccupied with what’s “trending” (hate that word), get yourself a gray nursery, pronto. What’s that? Sorry — I didn’t hear you. I was yawning :) Can I be honest with you? In addition to striking me as just plum …

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2013, Emerald Green, in action!

Annie Elliott | January 29, 2013

Who knew I’d end up embracing Pantone’s Color of the Year so wholeheartedly? Emerald Green,  I apologize! I’m sorry I doubted you! I was counting on a liberal interpretation of the color — grassy green, yellowy green, limey green — to get me through 2013. Turns out I don’t need to! I mean, look at that …

Dear bossy color, What I want: cellular window shades with blackout backing. What I have discovered I don’t want to pay the price of: See above. I have 9 feet to cover and am looking at at least $500. What I think I can afford that will accomplish what I need: curtains What I loathe: …

Happy New Year, Emerald Green! Bossy color’s finished powder room

Annie Elliott | January 10, 2013

Yes, Gentle Readers, the rumors are true. Emerald, aka 17-5641, is Pantone’s color of the year for 2013. Hooray! I’m going to be honest. Emerald green as “emerald green”, emerald as I think of it, a true jewel tone, green with a little blue in it, really saturated, really deep… It’s not my fave. Greens of …

Nate Berkus on when NOT to hire an interior designer: a True/False quiz

Annie Elliott | October 15, 2012

The ever-adorable Nate Berkus was the cover story in Sunday's Parade Magazine.

I'm loathe to disagree with Nate about anything. I mean, have you seen him? (Of course you have. You don't live under a rock.) He's a doll....

An open letter to the Washington Design Center

Annie Elliott | September 9, 2012

Dear Washington Design Center,

I knew it was too good to be true. All of those fantastic design resources under one roof, a mere 12 minutes from bossy color's world headquarters if I hit the lights right and a motorcade didn't harsh my buzz....

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
