Teenagers’ Bathroom Renovation…Someday

Annie Elliott | January 18, 2021

Gorgeous bathroom on isuwanee.com

Gentle Readers, I, like you, have had it. I am SO TIRED of this pandemic, not seeing my friends, not going to restaurants, and a million other things. But I’m also so, so tired of my house. (I may have found my foyer wallpaper, though! I’m going to keep you in suspense, but remember my…

Thank you, DC By Design! A Backsplash Retrospective

Annie Elliott | March 22, 2018

Thank you, Jennifer Sergent of the amazing blog, DC By Design! Jen invited me to do a guest post about my kitchen backsplash saga from start to (yay!) finish, and it went live today. When Jen learned that my original backsplash had arrived from China in roughly 700 pieces, she called me immediately. “Oh my gosh…

My Backsplash is in The New York Times!

Annie Elliott | March 4, 2018

Red flowers painted on a kitchen backsplash

Now THAT’s a sentence I never thought I’d write! I was so happy to be included in the New York Times article, “Telling a Story Through Tiles,” by the fantastic Steven Kurutz. Thank you! The online edition is up now, and I believe it will be in print this Thursday, 3.8. The focus of the article is…

Chinoiserie backsplash, installed!

Annie Elliott | September 24, 2017

Close-up picture of the red tile showing a red bluebird and a pomegranate

Gentle Readers, the journey is over. And what a journey it’s been. This blog post was the last time I could bear to write about the nightmare that had become my dream of a gorgeous, gigantic, hand-painted Chinoiserie backsplash. You remember, the one that arrived in about a million pieces. I bounced back pretty quickly, I…

Italy Vacation: A House in Umbria

Annie Elliott | June 12, 2017

Large stone house in Umbria, near Todi

What can you say about a two-week trip to Italy, besides, “It was amazing,” and, “Go the first chance you get?” It WAS amazing, and you SHOULD go the first chance you get! Our dear friends rented a house in Umbria and said, “Just come.” So we did. Part of the house dates to the…

The Chinoiserie is dead. Long live the new Chinoiserie!

Annie Elliott | February 12, 2017

Gentle Readers, I apologize for the lack of news regarding my kitchen-backsplash-Chinoiserie-ceramic-panel situation. You see, my heart was broken. Kind of like the panels when they arrived recently. Yep: it arrived broken. And not just the nice clean crack you see above; the panels were in SHARDS. It isn’t surprising, though, considering the crate that was used: Yes,…

My kitchen renovation, part 13: backsplash

Annie Elliott | January 6, 2017

Painted red painting of birds, leaves, trees for kitchen backsplash

Hello, Gentle Readers! Backsplash update: the custom Chinoiserie panel situation has been, shall we say, challenging. I won’t sleep until it’s safely on my wall. It’s literally on a slow boat from China as I type, and it’s expected to arrive in another, oh, 4 weeks or so. Pray for calm seas. Today’s post is not about…

Window treatments don’t have to be fabric, of course. My favorite non-fabric window treatments are natural woven Roman shades, which are made of bamboo or natural grasses. They’re terrific alone, but they also look great as a first layer, under drapes.

How great do they look under these green drapes? 😍

As your friend, it is my duty to tell you: **you must have some wallpaper in your home.**

Choose your paper first — or 2 papers, so you can compare costs. Then I STRONGLY recommend bringing in a professional hanger to tell you how much of *that particular paper* you’ll need. The amount depends not only on the size of the room, but also the scale of the design, the fragility of the paper (to allow for mistakes), and how the rolls are packaged. Manufacturers literally cannot make it more confusing!

If you see a lamp you like, BUY IT. You will never be sorry. You WILL find a place to put it.

The hard truth is that you may not know whether a lamp will work in a certain spot until you try it. It may not be the place you originally had in mind. It may not even be in your current house. But you will find a great place for it, somewhere, someday.

Natural woven Romans can tone down the formality of a room... and they work in modern or classic interiors, as you can see ;)
