Purple? Pink? Mauve? Fuchsia? Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid

Annie Elliott | December 6, 2013

The news is out: Pantone’s color of the year for 2014 is 18-3224, Radiant Orchid.

UGH.

Now, you may be thinking, “Hold it right there, missy! Mere weeks ago you were telling us about your new-found acceptance of purple. Are you backpedaling? Are you now against it after being for it, or whatever?”

Radiant Orchid honeymoon suite (really?!)

NO, Gentle Readers. NO. I am not backpedaling. Many shades of purple – including aubergine and lavender – have found their way into my portfolio, and subsequently my heart.

But Radiant Orchid? What IS it? Is it purple? Fuchsia? I think The Wall Street Journal might have it right in calling Radiant Orchid PINK. Their headline is, “Love It, Hate It, a New Pink Is Coming.”

Revolting Radiant Fuchsia room

Radiant Orchid is just so…so IN YOUR FACE. (This from bossy color.) The more saturated it gets, the less I like it. There will be broad interpretations of this color in 2014 — there always are — but in it’s purest form, on Pantone’s swatch, I intensely dislike it.

I think Pantone often gets the Color of the Year right. Let’s do a quick bossy color blog review, shall we? I’ve been blogging since 2009 (holy cow), so in reverse date order:

2013: Pantone’s 17-5641 Emerald Green. Fabulous.

2012: Pantone’s 17-1463 Tangerine Tango. I thought this was stating the obvious – orange had been big for a year – but the color was great.

2011: Pantone’s 18-2120 Honeysuckle Pink. Festive! (This, btw, is NOT Radiant Orchid; it is pink with a dash of magenta in it. There’s a difference.)

See?

2010: Pantone’s 15-5519, Turquoise. I struggled with this one initially. But add a lot of white and call it “Robin’s Egg Blue,” and I grew fond of this color. After all, my office at that time was Benjamin Moore‘s 2052-70, Ice Blue, which, as many of you argued, was actually a super duper light turquoise.

And finally, 2009: Pantone’s 14-0848, Mimosa: A delightful shade of yellow! Very close to the color of my living room!

I’ll be honest: the Bossettes are laughing at me right now. Katherine is reminding me that Emerald Green took some getting used to, and New Nola thinks it’s silly to get all worked up about a color. (She’ll learn :) )

You know what? OK.

Pantone: you’re on: I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE. I am going to find a way to work with this color, even if it kills me (and it might). I am going to search high and low and CREATE A PINTEREST BOARD with purplish pinkish fuchsia-ish images that don’t make me sick to my stomach. Maybe it will help the thousands – nay, millions? – of you who are similarly struggling.

Together, we’ll get through this. Onward!

SO much fun to create this entertainment space! This client already had a living room and kitchen…this space is for friends and family to relax, talk, and just BE. What’s your favorite feature?

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! There’s no better paper to feature in August than Schumacher’s Citrus Garden 🍋 🍊.The Swedish designer, artist, and architect Josef Frank created the Citrus Garden pattern as a fabric in 1947. The hand-drawn, whimsical, quintessentially mid-century, irresistibly cheerful design exemplifies Frank’s philosophy: “The freer the pattern, the better.” I’ve used Citrus Garden fabric a few times, but shockingly, the pattern wasn’t on wallpaper until 2017!! 🤯 Deprived for so long!! As soon as the opportunity arises, I’m running, not walking, to get my hands on this wallpaper.@schumacher_midatlantic 📸 @angieseckinger

All of a sudden, novelty accent lamps are EVERYWHERE! Some are cute, some are…inadvisable ;) If you just can’t resist a lamp in the shape of a snail, my latest blog post has recommendations for proceeding responsibly💡

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! Let’s talk about Cole & Son’s Acquario, shall we?Iconic Italian artist Piero Fornasetti designed Acquario for Cole & Son in the early 2010s. He was going through an ocean phase, captivated by its mysterious depths 🐠, so he developed this fish design and put it first on plates and fabrics, and then, luckily for us, on wallpaper. We just installed Acquario in the Print Room Blue colorway in a client’s tiny practice room (he plays classical guitar), and we LOVE it! That big old blowfish, just gliding along…he kills me.Featuring: @cole_and_son_wallpapers @fornasetti

Get ready for a dramatic before and after! We transformed a playroom into a dining room, and the result is pretty amazing. (But still fun!) #wallpaper #interiordesign #diningroominspo

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss the chinoiserie wallpaper in the Great Hall at @citytavern_dc in Washington, DC. Ooooohh - field trip!I was delighted to visit City Tavern recently. It’s a historic 1796 Federal building in the heart of Georgetown, and all the cool kids hung out there. You know, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson…those guys. At one point, the building boasted the largest room in Washington.I, of course, was captivated by the Great Hall, which is covered in @graciestudio hand-painted wallpaper — which was selected by none other than Jackie Kennedy! EVEN THOUGH at that time the building was a club that didn’t admit women. Harumph. The chinoiserie walls are gorgeous from far away, but they’re amazing up close, also: you can see faint brushstrokes left by the painters. Doesn’t that give you a shiver? I love it.

For a recent article in @vogueliving, I was asked how to mix wallpapers — either in the same room or adjacent rooms. I have a few pieces of advice to offer 😊See my latest blog post for more…#interiordesign #designblog #wallpaperinspo
