The challenges of open floor plans

Annie Elliott | July 7, 2013

It sounds so great, doesn’t it? An “open floor plan?” One envisions soaring, light-filled spaces; coordinated furniture; plenty of room for family and friends to relax… I hate to break it to you, Gentle Readers, but open floor plans present some challenges. Before you buy an open-plan home or renovate to create one, here are some things …

West Elm’s Martini Table

Annie Elliott | May 7, 2013

New rule: the seventh time I recommend something, I have to blog about it. I’m exaggerating (who, me?), but this little accent piece has come in handy so many times! It’s not right to keep it to myself any longer. I’d like you to meet West Elm’s Martini Table. It’s a stool! It’s a table! …

Three excellent “lows” for your high/low mix (and for less than $200!)

Annie Elliott | April 9, 2013

Let’s face it: we all love the pricey stuff. It can be prettier, better made, and just more interesting than pieces you buy off-the shelf. But you know how I value the high/low mix. And I keep turning to these three items as my favorite “lows.” 1. Robert Abbey’s Genie Lamp The ubiquitous gourd lamp has …

Annie Elliott | March 16, 2013

Need more tips about using Pantone’s color of the year to make your home au courant? Look no further than today’s article in The Kansas City Star: “Dare to Dabble in Bold Emerald.”  Thanks so much for including me, KCS! I suggested that layering Emerald Green with various shades of blue was a pretty foolproof way to work …

There are grand hotels, and there are grand hotels: The Jefferson in Richmond, and The Queensbury in Glens Falls, NY

Annie Elliott | February 26, 2013

There’s nothing like a little contrast. Two weekends ago, our family flew to the town where I grew up, Glens Falls, NY. We’d arranged to meet friends up there, and John wanted the girls to try alpine skiing. We stayed in Glens Falls’s best hotel, The Queensbury. I love The Queensbury Hotel. It’s the fanciest …

Accent wall update part deux! Trends in wallpaper accent walls

Annie Elliott | February 21, 2013

I wrote about wallpaper accent walls last spring, but since we’re seeing them EVERYWHERE, I think we should examine the latest trends. Don’t you? But first, a reminder: follow the same rules you would for PAINTED accent walls. Accentuate unbroken, prominent walls. The best wall is usually the first one you see when you enter the room. Trend …

Accent wall update! New trends in accent walls

Annie Elliott | February 13, 2013

Like stainless steel appliances, painted accent walls are here to stay. Fascinatingly, after more than five — count ’em: 5! — years of blogging, “The Accent Wall: Friend or Foe?“ remains one of my most-read posts. Can you believe it? I’ll be honest: I still have mixed feelings. But there are several trends in accent walls that give me …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
