What’s inspiring bossy color this week? Light blue and coral

Annie Elliott | September 28, 2014

You already know that we’re completely taken with Duralee’s Bailey & Griffin fabrics. Right now, their Paradise Toile in blue and coral has become an absolute obsession. So I’ve been looking for examples of blue and coral  — Robin’s egg blue and orange, really — to inspire us as we build some design schemes in this palette. Here’s what we’ve …

Canopy beds at Colonial Williamsburg

Annie Elliott | September 14, 2014

Love them or hate them, there’s something commanding about a canopy bed. I wrote about them not too long ago; designers such as Alessandra Branca and Thom Filicia are putting a fresh spin on canopy beds, and some of them are just lovely. Some use gobs of fabric, and some merely hint at a canopy-like structure. A …

Go ahead: hang art on your bookcases

Annie Elliott | September 7, 2014

I think hanging a big old painting on the front of a bookcase is one of the most elegant looks around. [photo deleted] There’s more than one way to hang art on bookcases, of course. (Notice that I didn’t say, “right or wrong way,” which shows amazing restraint.) My favorite style is layered and casual — almost …

Wallpaper at Colonial Williamsburg

Annie Elliott | August 26, 2014

It’s embarrassing but true. As a red-blooded, card-carrying citizen of these United States of America, I had never been to Colonial Williamsburg before this summer. But let me tell you: it was worth the wait. I loved everything about it. I loved how accurate it was. (When my husband visited as a kid in 1976, the thinking was that …

Paper Rock Scissors in St. Michaels MD

Paper Rock Scissors in St. Michaels, MD. Go.

Annie Elliott | July 2, 2014

You know how, when you’re on vacation in a charming small town, you drift in and out of ye olde gifte shoppes fairly mindlessly, your eyes casting over the goods that seem to be in every store: cocktail napkins with crabs on them; cursive wooden signs that command you to DREAM, or EAT; and “sea-inspired jewelry?” …

Restoration Hardware revisited, from catalogs to capitals

Annie Elliott | June 6, 2014

You know that I haven’t always been Restoration Hardware‘s biggest fan. In fact, some of its designs in years past have left me, well, baffled. Remember the Aviator Wing Desk? And how I even offered some friendly constructive criticism? Well, that was three years ago. And I am nothing if not fair. So I was …

Duralee’s re-imagined Bailey & Griffin fabric: very bossy!

Annie Elliott | May 18, 2014

I love old. I love recycled. And I love “made in the USA.” So imagine my delight when I learned about Bailey & Griffin, a  luxury fabric line that had been out of production for years until Duralee revived it. The brand’s history is interesting. “Founded in 1923, Bailey & Griffin began as the U.S. distributor for UK-based fabric house, …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
