How to update a vintage bathroom (when the tile is pristine!)

Annie Elliott | January 30, 2022

Blue floral wallpaper in vintage pink tile bathroom

Please note, Gentle Readers, that I did not say renovate. Or even remodel. No, I said update. Renovating a bathroom (which, as you know, I have just survived) is a messy, inconvenient, time-consuming, and expensive undertaking. We’re not always up for it. Sometimes, a client has a bathroom or powder room that is outdated and…

Introducing my new, gorgeous foyer wallpaper: “Narina!”

Annie Elliott | August 22, 2021

Green wallpaper behind an antique secretary

(Not “Narnia” as I first thought!) Gentle Readers, I have not been holding out on you. With our bathroom renovation taking place on the 3rd floor, I thought it wise to wait until all the bumping and thumping up and down the stairs subsided before papering the foyer walls. I was away for several weeks…

Another pandemic project: New wallpaper for my foyer

Annie Elliott | November 16, 2020

Let’s talk wallpaper, Gentle Readers, shall we? When someone comes to our house, they usually say something complimentary about the wallpaper in our foyer. It’s Nina Campbell’s Paradiso, and it’s pretty dramatic. *I* love it, and my family loves it. But maybe I should say, “loveD.” Because while I still appreciate that the wallpaper is…

The Chairish Challenge! Eastlake Chairs in a sunny sitting room

Annie Elliott | October 12, 2015

http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=178895318

Thanks, Chairish, for inviting bossy color to participate in your design challenge! THE ASSIGNMENT: Take a room from white to bright, starting with an accent chair from Chairish. THE RESULT: A bossified sunny sitting room. I chose a pair of Victorian Eastlake chairs as our starting point. Don’t you usually think of heavy, dark, musty and dusty rooms when you hear Victorian?…

5 things you need to know about wallpaper

Annie Elliott | September 21, 2015

Historic wallpaper

I hope that by now, I’ve convinced all of you to have wallpaper SOMEWHERE in your lovely homes. Maybe you’re still getting comfortable with wallpaper — using it as an accent wall in a bedroom or trying it out in your powder room — or maybe you’ve gone whole hog and are hanging it faster than the factories can print it. Either way, here…

Bossy color hearts Anna French

Girl's long hair with red dye at the tip

I arrived home a few hours ago to an empty house. My husband and daughters are still in St. Michaels, where the girls will go to sailing camp this week. Usually I love chilling by myself at home; it’s so rare that no one else is here. But it was a really fun weekend, filled w/ amazing food, bike…

Matchy-matchy walls and upholstery: Cool again, or too soon?

Annie Elliott | December 1, 2014

1980s floral chintz matching furniture and walls

Remember in the ’80s, how fashion-forward it was to upholster furniture in the same pattern as the wallpaper? And sometimes carry the pattern onto the drapes, too? Well, everything old is new again…again. I am an ’80s survivor, so you’d think I’d have trouble with this particular “new again.” Au contraire, mon frere! Today’s matchy-matchiness is…

Window treatments don’t have to be fabric, of course. My favorite non-fabric window treatments are natural woven Roman shades, which are made of bamboo or natural grasses. They’re terrific alone, but they also look great as a first layer, under drapes.

How great do they look under these green drapes? 😍

As your friend, it is my duty to tell you: **you must have some wallpaper in your home.**

Choose your paper first — or 2 papers, so you can compare costs. Then I STRONGLY recommend bringing in a professional hanger to tell you how much of *that particular paper* you’ll need. The amount depends not only on the size of the room, but also the scale of the design, the fragility of the paper (to allow for mistakes), and how the rolls are packaged. Manufacturers literally cannot make it more confusing!

If you see a lamp you like, BUY IT. You will never be sorry. You WILL find a place to put it.

The hard truth is that you may not know whether a lamp will work in a certain spot until you try it. It may not be the place you originally had in mind. It may not even be in your current house. But you will find a great place for it, somewhere, someday.

Natural woven Romans can tone down the formality of a room... and they work in modern or classic interiors, as you can see ;)
