Patrice, by Bailey & Griffin

Duralee’s re-imagined Bailey & Griffin fabric: very bossy!

Annie Elliott | May 18, 2014

I love old. I love recycled. And I love “made in the USA.” So imagine my delight when I learned about Bailey & Griffin, a  luxury fabric line that had been out of production for years until Duralee revived it. The brand’s history is interesting. “Founded in 1923, Bailey & Griffin began as the U.S. distributor for UK-based fabric house, …

Are canopy beds back?

Annie Elliott | May 9, 2014

Or did they never leave? I’ve been revisiting the work of some “old masters” of interior decorating lately, including and especially David Hicks. He is indeed a master of many things — accessorizing and displaying collections among them — but I’ve been particularly enchanted by his canopy beds. Or, more accurately, “tester beds,” in which fabric is …

7 things every man should have in his home

Annie Elliott | May 2, 2014

Inspired by Elle Decor’s list of 10 things every WOMAN needs to have in her home, I offer these suggestions for the testosterone set. Doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, partnered or happily single: as a modern man, I believe these are must-haves if you want to move beyond typical “masculine” decor. 1. A room …

Painting soffits

Go home and paint your soffits. Right now!

Annie Elliott | March 28, 2014

[Updated 4/2021] Gentle Readers, there is a long-running debate between my painters and me as to whether we paint the underside of soffits. (You know, those bump-outs that contain ducts and things.) I generally say yes. Paint them. Here’s what happens when you don’t paint the underside of a soffit: Doesn’t that look choppy? (Let’s not …

Lacquered walls: why, when, and how

Annie Elliott | March 14, 2014

So: LACQUER. Elegant. Elusive. SHINY. Aren’t they fantastic? Lacquered walls, Gentle Readers, are very “go big or go home.” Frankly, lacquered walls are so bold and bossy (is it still legal to use that word, or has the ban been successful?) that it’s shocking I don’t do them every day. I mean, wow, right?! But …

How I became an interior designer (bossy style)

Annie Elliott | March 7, 2014

Recently, a high school student from Georgia contacted me. She was interested in becoming an interior designer, and she wanted to know how I got into the field. People ask me this question with alarming regularity, so I thought I’d go ahead and post part of the interview. (If this is too “all bossy, all …

Black and blue (and brass): 2014’s edgy color combo

Annie Elliott | January 18, 2014

Remember how I said that a bossy color goal for 2014 was to use ever-edgier color combinations? And I mentioned black and blue as one of those combos? Well, I’ve decided that this particular color pairing is worthy of more attention. Turns out I started using black and blue together last year without really registering …

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
