Are separate bedrooms becoming more popular?

Annie Elliott | October 29, 2023

I thought it might have started during COVID, Gentle Readers. You know, when isolation was de rigueur. The slow appearance of that double line – or sometimes even the onset of a sniffle – would result in banishment, the offending spouse sent to live in the guest room…or basement, or home office with a pull-out …

Quick Q+A: Dorm room case study

Annie Elliott | August 15, 2022

Dear Annie, So what did you end up doing for your daughters’ dorm rooms? – Several people So glad you asked, Gentle Readers! Ruthie and I JUST ordered a bunch of stuff on Saturday. We’re a little behind, to be honest. (And maybe a wee bit in denial?) Georgie doesn’t leave until mid-September, so we …

Dorm décor: How to make your dorm room slay

Annie Elliott | August 8, 2022

Attention, college-goers! I’ve been fielding a lot of questions recently about decorating dorm rooms. (And not just from my own children, I swear.) What should I bring? What’s worth caring about, and what isn’t? What should I coordinate with my roommate? Things were much simpler when I went to school, lemme tell ya. Here’s my …

The best (easiest) pillow arrangements for beds

Annie Elliott | May 1, 2022

Oh, Gentle Readers. Anyone who says the pandemic is over hasn’t stopped by my house recently: 3/4 of our household is COVID-positive right now. I have been spared so far, but I fear my luck can’t last forever. Sigh. ANYway, for obvious reasons, BEDS have been very much on my mind. Beds and the pillows …

Show House Part 8: We’re Open!

Annie Elliott | August 30, 2020

What a week it’s been, Gentle Readers! Or rather, what a few weeks it’s been. First there was the stretch of publicity leading up to the show house. That included a House Beautiful Instagram Live tour; a socially-distanced party hosted by Ferrari, one of the ASPIRE House‘s sponsors; and an interview with Erika Gonzalez on …

Show House Part 7! Photography and the Home Stretch

Annie Elliott | August 16, 2020

It’s almost here, Gentle Readers! ASPIRE House McLean will open this coming weekend, on August 22. Here’s the link to buy tickets and reserve your time slot. You can catch glimpses of some rooms via the #aspirehousemclean Instagram hashtag, but believe me, you’ve got to visit in person. I was there on Friday for our …

Show House Part 6: Furniture and fabric

Annie Elliott | July 19, 2020

Oh, Gentle Readers — things are really moving with the ASPIRE House now! The house itself is pretty stunning, I have to say. It’s by Artisan Builders. My colleague Amy and I felt a definite museum-y/gallery-y vibe the first time we saw it with walls, which was only a few weeks ago. Isn’t it dramatic? …

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! This week, feast your eyes on @timorous_beasties Fruit Looters. TB claims that William Morris’s Strawberry Thief pattern inspired Fruit Looters, but only the name indicates the connection: Strawberry Thief, Fruit Looters…get it? Whereas Morris’s iconic pattern is medium-scale, rhythmic, 2-D, cartoon-like, and muted, Fruit Looters is the opposite in every way but subject matter. The scale is huge, with the foliage “stripes” providing a geometric order, and it oozes TB’s trademark edginess. The crisp pattern is finely drawn; pull it apart, and each element — a flower, a bird — could be in an English botanical print. Fruit Looters comes in vivid, saturated colorways, some with a metallic sheen, and dramatic black is present in all.Recently, a client (who originally introduced me to Timorous Beasties!) and I used Fruit Looters wallpaper in her stairwell, in the Alabaster colorway. The drama. Oh, the drama!

SO much fun to create this entertainment space! This client already had a living room and kitchen…this space is for friends and family to relax, talk, and just BE. What’s your favorite feature?

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! There’s no better paper to feature in August than Schumacher’s Citrus Garden 🍋 🍊.The Swedish designer, artist, and architect Josef Frank created the Citrus Garden pattern as a fabric in 1947. The hand-drawn, whimsical, quintessentially mid-century, irresistibly cheerful design exemplifies Frank’s philosophy: “The freer the pattern, the better.” I’ve used Citrus Garden fabric a few times, but shockingly, the pattern wasn’t on wallpaper until 2017!! 🤯 Deprived for so long!! As soon as the opportunity arises, I’m running, not walking, to get my hands on this wallpaper.@schumacher_midatlantic 📸 @angieseckinger

All of a sudden, novelty accent lamps are EVERYWHERE! Some are cute, some are…inadvisable ;) If you just can’t resist a lamp in the shape of a snail, my latest blog post has recommendations for proceeding responsibly💡

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! Let’s talk about Cole & Son’s Acquario, shall we?Iconic Italian artist Piero Fornasetti designed Acquario for Cole & Son in the early 2010s. He was going through an ocean phase, captivated by its mysterious depths 🐠, so he developed this fish design and put it first on plates and fabrics, and then, luckily for us, on wallpaper. We just installed Acquario in the Print Room Blue colorway in a client’s tiny practice room (he plays classical guitar), and we LOVE it! That big old blowfish, just gliding along…he kills me.Featuring: @cole_and_son_wallpapers @fornasetti

Given that my brain is still on an academic calendar 🤷‍♀️ , I thought I'd do a little review and see which blog posts resonated with you the most in 2025-26. Get ready for a dramatic before and after! We transformed a playroom into a dining room, and the result is pretty amazing. (But still fun!) #wallpaper #interiordesign #diningroominspo
