Renovating before moving in? Which decisions are critical…and which can wait

Annie Elliott | March 28, 2021

Gentle Readers, in the past few months, several people have called our office in a panic. They’d purchased a house, they were 80% finished with the renovations, and the deadline for finish selections was yesterday. Adding to the panic was the callers’ belief that they also had to make decisions now about window treatments, rugs, …

*My* Color of the Year 2021: Green

Annie Elliott | January 3, 2021

Happy New Year, Gentle Readers! A hearty ta-ta to 2020! Good riddance! Over the holiday break, my mind kept wandering back to Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2021. So disappointing. If *I* were to name a color of the year for 2021, it would be green. Aside from the obvious associations for this particular …

Pantone’s Colors of the Year 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating

Annie Elliott | December 14, 2020

I was sitting on our back porch this eerily warm weekend when my teenage daughter Ruthie came out. Ruthie: Whatcha doing? Me: Writing about Pantone’s Colors Of the Year for 2021. Without much success, I’m afraid. R: Oh! What’s the color? Me: No, what are they. They did two colors this year. R: Can they …

Tips for choosing paint colors in This Old House Magazine

Annie Elliott | September 27, 2020

“Read This Before You Pick a Paint Color,” reads the title of Kathryn O’Shea Evans’ excellent article in the September/October issue of This Old House Magazine. Putting aside the fact that I participated, (thank you, Kathryn and This Old House!), the article is chock full of helpful tips. As you know, Gentle Readers, painting a …

What does “luxury” look like? And thank you, Wall Street Journal

Annie Elliott | July 8, 2019

I hope you saw us in The Wall Street Journal on Saturday! Thank you, WSJ Off Duty and Kathryn O’Shea Evans, for featuring one of our recent projects in the House Tours column. The article, “How Color Made a Routine Condo Special,” went online last week, but it wasn’t until I saw the article in …

Thank you, New York Times! Disrupting the paint industry

Annie Elliott | March 28, 2019

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably given a thought or two to paint sometime in your life. So you won’t want to miss Steven Kurutz‘s excellent article in The New York Times today about two companies (founded by millennials, natch) that are disrupting the paint industry by selling paint by mail. Thanks so much for …

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2019: Living Coral

Annie Elliott | December 6, 2018

THANK YOU, Pantone! If ever we needed a lift, it’s now. Kudos to you for selecting an optimistic, playful, happy — almost giddy! — color for 2019: Living Coral. What a relief. I’m serious: I lose sleep over this stuff. As much as I’d like to deny it, Pantone’s Color of the Year seeps into …

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
