Pantone’s Color of the Year 2022: Very Peri. Not the worst, but definitely not the best

Annie Elliott | December 13, 2021

It could have been worse, Gentle Readers. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2022 is Very Peri, a clear, perky purple with a blue edge. Bold but cold. The people at the Pantone Color Institute say, “Very Peri, a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone, blends the faithfulness and constancy of …

Seasonal Outdoor Décor: Holiday Window Boxes

Annie Elliott | November 29, 2021

Happy Holidays, Gentle Readers! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I hope that you’re excited (and rested up) for whatever December holiday/s you celebrate. Our Thanksgiving tradition is to visit my parents near Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia. That’s my adopted hometown: in addition to going to college in Philadelphia, I lived at …

What’s That Wallpaper? Sex Education and Succession

Annie Elliott | November 14, 2021

I know, Gentle Readers: I’m late to the party. I only started watching Sex Education recently, but I’m making up for lost time. I love it. (I also love that I’m NOT watching it with my teenagers. As are they.) Anyhoo, I was delighted to note that I recognized two of the wallpapers in Jean …

Should I Paint My Stained Woodwork? The Most Controversial Question You’ll Ever Ask

Annie Elliott | November 1, 2021

Just a few days ago, Gentle Readers, there was an article by Eve M. Kahn in The New York Times about painted woodwork. People have extraordinarily strong opinions about painting woodwork, myself included. It’s right up there with painting brick. (My take on painting brick, by the way? Inside: definitely. Outside: maybe not. Painting stone? …

High Point Market 2021: Winners and…Others (and a decorating trend or two)

Annie Elliott | October 18, 2021

Hello, Gentle Readers! I just got back from High Point Furniture Market, to which I hadn’t been for 2 years! It was more subdued than usual (fewer people, of course), but super fun and educational nonetheless. If you’re not familiar with “Market,” as they say, here are some previous blog posts to fill you in: …

Decorating in fall colors (which work year-round, of course!)

Annie Elliott | October 4, 2021

I don’t know about you, Gentle Readers, but NEVER have I been so excited for fall. School has resumed in person, so the kids are happy…we’ve had a few crisp days, which makes me excited to wear sweaters…I daresay we’re ALL ready for a change, and it’s a-coming.

Should you paint your beautiful brick house?

Annie Elliott | July 25, 2021

The short and unsatisfying answer, Gentle Readers, is maybe. It’s entirely up to you (and your trusty designer). In sorting through my thoughts about this subject, I couldn’t come up with a hard and fast set of rules — much to my chagrin. Sometimes, a red brick house is drop-dead gorgeous. Sometimes, a brick house …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
