Perfect pedestal sink: St. Thomas Creations Richmond

Annie Elliott | September 25, 2008

Honestly, I thought I’d already posted this. I have been using St. Thomas Creation’s Richmond Pedestal Lavatory – large and small models – for years. YEARS. But it wasn’t until I came across the sink in the fine print of Domino Magazine today that I realized that I had not, in fact, spread the gospel …

Best of bossy’s colors: My 3 favorite whites for trim

Annie Elliott | September 23, 2008

All by Benjamin Moore: OC-17 White Dove.A little grey, good with cool colors. OC-39 Timid White.A little creamy, good with warm colors. HC-27 Monterey White.A little taupe-y, good with rich, darker colors. Oh, and Super White for most bathroom trim. I tend to use a semi-gloss finish for trim, both because it cleans easily and …

Let the materials do the talking: stone, glass and wood bathroom

Annie Elliott | September 20, 2008

These clients had a perfectly fine master bath, but it looked pretty shabby after a dramatic renovation to the attached bedroom. The new bedroom has miles of mahogany built-ins, so we started with a custom-built mahogany vanity base in the same style. Then we had to choose the rest of the materials. The husband wanted …

What’s in your bathroom?

Annie Elliott | September 15, 2008

Here’s what’s in the restroom of a DC restaurant called Proof. Check out this shiny metallic wallpaper. How amazing is it that the geometric pattern of the wallpaper is imitated in the mosaic tile below it? And when you really get close, you see that the wallpaper Xs are actually women’s legs, in fishnets and …

Best of bossy’s colors #4: Wedgewood Gray

Annie Elliott | September 10, 2008

Blue is back. Gray-blue is better. For a sophisticated greyish-blue that’s deep but not depressing, check out Benjamin Moore‘s HC-146 Wedgewood Gray. I’ve used it in several baths and bedrooms, but I’m dying to try it in a dining room. It’s so versatile it’s almost a neutral.

The importance of good tile installation, or, I’m in love with the tile man…

Annie Elliott | September 8, 2008

…and my husband doesn’t mind. Tile installation can make or break a project. Inexpensive tile painstakingly installed will look elegant, and a sloppy job will make the most expensive tile look cheap cheap cheap. Not the look you’re going for. When you combine lovely tile with expert installation, this is what can happen: When I …

Go Tar Heels I: Black and White Hallway

Annie Elliott | September 2, 2008

I was wandering around Chapel Hill, NC this weekend, and I popped into the Carolina Inn. It’s a lovely place, decorated exactly as you would expect: floral upholstery, formal drapes with swags, needlepoint rugs, antique reproductions…all in all, a tasteful if predictable scheme for a “historic” inn (it was built in 1924). As I rounded …

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
