These clients had a perfectly fine master bath, but it looked pretty shabby after a dramatic renovation to the attached bedroom. The new bedroom has miles of mahogany built-ins, so we started with a custom-built mahogany vanity base in the same style.
Then we had to choose the rest of the materials. The husband wanted to come to the tile store with me, which I usually discourage because the selection can be overwhelming. (“That’s my JOB,” I pleaded with him. “To LIMIT your options!”) But he insisted, and I love what we came up with.
He needed very little convincing to go with the grey stone 6 x 12 tile for the walls. There’s something so straightforward and dignified about that tile.
The red floor tile, on the other hand, took some fancy talking on my part. “But it looks like candy!” I finally blurted out. Then it occurred to me that a bathroom floor made out of candy might not be seen as a plus. Backpedal, backpedal…
Fortunately, I know these clients well enough that I could do a pretty tough sell. We need to enliven the grey stone walls, I said. The glass has depth, which helps a small bathroom. There’s a skylight – the floor will be absolutely luminous. And so on.
