Design House update: Those darn cabinets

Annie Elliott | January 28, 2009

I hope some of you are finding these posts at least mildly interesting, because frankly, they’re beginning to bum me out. I’ll feel more upbeat when I have better news to report. Here’s the cabinetry update. Yesterday – before the wintry weather hit – I got out my compass and ventured across the river into …

Design House: The saga continues

Annie Elliott | January 27, 2009

The first thing a kitchen designer on a tight timeframe should do is nail down the cabinetry. I mean, some fancy-pants unused kitchens out there may get away with a chopping block and a $7,000 fridge, but no kitchen I design – even a faux one – is going to be so obviously useless. Well-meaning …

Wish list for 2009

Annie Elliott | January 5, 2009

Even when I remember to make New Year’s resolutions, I NEVER remember to keep them. So this year, I thought I’d try a different approach: a wish list. Even in a bad economy, spending is still the American way. I see it as my patriotic duty. 1. That darn Eames aluminum chair I mentioned recently. …

C’mon, Formica! And other trends for 2009 from the LA Times

Annie Elliott | January 4, 2009

Formica, I’m rooting for you. In the LA Times article, “Bad design trends we hope die in 2009,” there, plain as day, is this: Please, in the kitchen, no more granite countertop. It came into vogue in the ’80s, and it makes a place look dated instantaneously. I am pushing for an orange Formica comeback….” …

Five $500 home improvement ideas

Annie Elliott | December 8, 2008

I know the economy’s stalling, but here are 5 things you can do for a lift in these trying times, each for about $500. 1. Have a room painted. Notice how I didn’t say, “paint a room?” That’s because for $500, you should be able to hire someone to paint it for you, especially if …

Cool mirrors at 10,000 Villages

Annie Elliott | December 5, 2008

Just today, I was having lunch w/ my friend and fellow blogger Ketura Persellin, and she mentioned that she had yet to find the perfect mirror for her less-than-perfect bathroom. I suggested that a mirror with some visual interest – rather than a plain frameless one – could be just the thing to distract her …

Pueblo Revival Survival Strategy #2: Homey

Annie Elliott | October 14, 2008

When faced with “Pueblo Revival” architecture, an alternative to a traditional Southwestern interior is the homey approach. This Santa Fe guest house is comfortable but elegant, distinguished by an airy interior and a fabulous art collection. As with Survival Strategy #1: Contemporary, the walls and ceiling are light in color. Note, though, that here they’ve …

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
