I was wandering around Chapel Hill, NC this weekend, and I popped into the Carolina Inn. It’s a lovely place, decorated exactly as you would expect: floral upholstery, formal drapes with swags, needlepoint rugs, antique reproductions…all in all, a tasteful if predictable scheme for a “historic” inn (it was built in 1924).
As I rounded a corner, I was hit by a blast of sunlight. In front of me was a long hallway-slash-atrium with large black and white tile floors. I later learned that it’s called, trickily, Black and White Hallway.
I’m a sucker for black and white checkered floors under any circumstances, but add yellow walls and sunlight to the equation and I’m done. This yellow runs through the entire ground floor, and it had the faintest hint of green…it looked like it could have been Farrow & Ball‘s Hound Lemon (#2), but that’s conjecture on my part. In any event, it was a delightful surprise.
As an aside, congratulations, Tar Heels, on winning your first football game of the season. I can’t pretend to understand the obsession, but I know it’s a very big deal.
