You asked…about MORE colors for bedroom/bath suites

Annie Elliott | September 11, 2009

The Gentle Reader who sent in the previous question also wondered about the colors in her guest bedroom and bath suite... Annie – The guest bathroom is near the guest bedroom and although I wanted it to harmonize, I also wanted a little more drama for this bathroom. The pedestal sink, water closet, tub and …

You asked…about paint colors for a bedroom/bath suite

Annie Elliott | September 8, 2009

Hi —I live in Naples, Florida, and purchased a new condo when I moved here 8 years ago….My issue relates to paint for the master bedroom/bath. Master bedroom is a good size. Presently painted Penny (Ben Moore’s 2163-30), but I’m not happy with this color–too orange looking. I want to repaint the bedroom Clinton Brown, …

Gift idea for the color lover in your life, hot liquids be damned

Annie Elliott | September 3, 2009

I was walking up 18th Street in Philadelphia yesterday, and a store window caught my eye. The store is called Premium Steap, and it sells all things tea-related. Now, it’s a little-known fact that I don’t care for hot drinks. I apologize. For the record, I don’t think this is personality quirk is charming or …

Bossy basic follow-up (and enough with the Shaker Beige, Annie!)

Annie Elliott | August 31, 2009

Several months ago, a wonderful client allowed me to dissect her “bossy basic” on the blog. Remember this? Well, Audrey wins the “Best Follow-Up” award. She kindly posted in-progress pictures and comments on this Picasa web album. Audrey, you rock. Thank you so much. I thought it might be fun to juxtapose a few “before” …

You asked…about a color that works with Benjamin Moore’s Shaker Beige

Annie Elliott | August 27, 2009

Hi Annie,I have noticed that you recommend BM Shaker Beige a lot, so I am hoping you can help me with the elusive paint color I am looking for. Most of the first floor of my home has recently been painted in BM Shaker Beige but I am looking for a deeper color that works …

Bye-bye, sofa

Annie Elliott | August 24, 2009

Dear black living room sofa, All good things must come to an end. I know, it’s sad. But not that sad, or else we’d be keeping you. I’m calling bulk trash today, sofa. John and I have finally decided that we’d rather have a gaping hole in our living room than live with you for …

Betty Pepis’s Interior Decoration A to Z, 1965

Annie Elliott | August 19, 2009

If we can’t poke fun at ourselves, who can we poke fun at? The “ourselves” being interior designers, decorators, home de-uglifiers, whatever you want to call us… When my husband and I were poking around this junk-slash-antique shop the other day, he unearthed this fabulous book from 1965: Interior Decoration A to Z, by Betty …

I was thrilled to attend Imar Lyman’s exhibition opening at the Kreeger recently! I’ve loved his work for years and am lucky enough to own one of his silkscreens (ours is of Frederick Douglass). He’s moved from portraiture to abstraction, but he still does some work in collage, which I confess is my favorite ;) The exhibition is up through July 11. Play hooky one afternoon and go.(The last painting is by Frank Stella, by the way — an influence on the artist, as you can see!)@imarhutchins @kreegermuseum

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)
