“What’s Your Color Personality?” House Beautiful wants to know

Annie Elliott | August 17, 2009

I love taking tests. Not school tests, or driving tests…fun tests. Quizzes. What a bonus that House Beautiful‘s latest color issue includes a test/quiz/questionnaire on its very last page: “What’s your color personality?” I probably would have taken the test anyway, but I don’t know if I would blogged about it were it not for …

You asked…about front doors and friends’ doors

Annie Elliott | August 14, 2009

Hi! My name is Kim and this is my first time to write on a blog.I have 2 entry doors on the front of my house: the front door and friend’s entry (which is really the laundry room). They are both painted white. My shutters are Charleston Green. My brick is Spalding Tudor by General …

Antiques or junk?

Annie Elliott | August 12, 2009

After reading Maria Killam‘s excellent post the other day about creating “vignettes” or “tablescapes,” I was feeling a bit under-accessorized. So I went out to this rather odd intersection in Royal Oak, about 15 minutes from St. Michaels, Maryland, where we’re staying. There are dozens of precious “interior design” shops in St. Michaels, but I …

You asked…about a drape-induced panic attack

Annie Elliott | August 10, 2009

Dear Annie: We’ve been in our house for one year. We painted the living room and I really like the color – though it didn’t do anything to pull the furniture together color-wise, we just liked the color. We just invested a good chunk of change in having custom drapes made. I chose the drapes …

Benjamin Moore’s Wedgewood Gray. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Annie Elliott | August 6, 2009

I’m a big fan of Benjamin Moore’s HC-146 Wedgewood Gray, as you know. So I was especially tickled when Sara sent pictures of her recently painted laundry and powder rooms. She writes: “…we did just renovate our laundry and powder rooms (they’re connected), and I couldn’t resist sending you before and after pictures….Thanks for saving …

Best of bossy’s colors: Shaker Beige

Annie Elliott | July 31, 2009

How exciting can beige be? It’s a valid question, but maybe this is the better one: do you really want your beige to be exciting? Wouldn’t you rather it be dependable, versatile, and lovely? Benjamin Moore‘s Shaker Beige HC-45 is all of those things. I’ve used it A LOT, and I’ve mentioned it in posts …

Little round house

Annie Elliott | July 29, 2009

I never thought I had much of a choice when considering the shape of a house. Square, rectangular, maybe an angle here or there, getting tricky with a curved bay window… But perfectly round? Leaving a barbecue in the Brookland neighborhood of D.C., we passed this house. It is absolutely, perfectly round. All the way …

I was thrilled to attend Imar Lyman’s exhibition opening at the Kreeger recently! I’ve loved his work for years and am lucky enough to own one of his silkscreens (ours is of Frederick Douglass). He’s moved from portraiture to abstraction, but he still does some work in collage, which I confess is my favorite ;) The exhibition is up through July 11. Play hooky one afternoon and go.(The last painting is by Frank Stella, by the way — an influence on the artist, as you can see!)@imarhutchins @kreegermuseum

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)
