Color camp, here I come!

Annie Elliott | October 22, 2009

I could have sworn BWI Airport had wireless internet access. Which is why I scrambled this morning to tie up all my client projects, bid my family a fond farewell, and get myself to the airport way early: for several hours of uninterrupted airport time to catch up on blogs and blogging. Tragically, I was …

Guest blog post on Hue: In praise of yellow

Annie Elliott | October 15, 2009

Fellow color blogger Rachel Perls of Hue went on vacation recently (lucky duck!) and had the incredible foresight to line up guest bloggers in her absence. Here’s bossy color’s contribution, about yellow. Enjoy!

Dear Gentle Readers – and Writers,

Annie Elliott | October 14, 2009

Have I told you lately how much I appreciate you? Your readership, your loyalty, your thoughtful comments, and your good looks. (Not that I’ve seen you, but one has a sense about these things.) There must be something in the air, because I have received many, MANY excellent questions and photographs from you recently. About …

I painted my office this weekend! Benjamin Moore’s Ice Blue

Annie Elliott | October 13, 2009

A three-day weekend loomed, and bossy color‘s world headquarters was in desperate need of an overhaul. This may be hard to follow, but stay with me… It all started with the living room drapes. Sigh. There they are, on the left. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with these drapes ever since I bought them 4 …

Movies: Lucky Number Slevin’s awesome interiors

Annie Elliott | October 8, 2009

Tragically, it’s rare that I see a hot movie in the theater anymore. That whole work-kids-life combo leaves precious little time for tracking the careers of super-beauties like, say, Josh Hartnett. Or Lucy Liu. It’s sad. But what’s downright disturbing is the fact that I miss aforementioned hot movies on Netflix. I mean, I’m the …

You asked…about banishing the red

Annie Elliott | September 30, 2009

Dear Annie:I need help with my living room. It’s time for the red to go away. I want something more sophisticated. We have a “great room” layout with a vaulted ceiling that attaches to the dining area and kitchen. I’d like to use one color for both rooms. I’m thinking of a pale bluish-gray. Or …

You asked…about an exterior STAIN color

Annie Elliott | September 12, 2009

Annie – Can you give me any suggestions for a funkier and/or more contemporary exterior stain color for my new modern house? This color has faded a bit in the past two years from southern exposure. Thanks! Susan Dear Susan: I would love to see your house a medium – not Cape-Cod light – grey. Too …

I was thrilled to attend Imar Lyman’s exhibition opening at the Kreeger recently! I’ve loved his work for years and am lucky enough to own one of his silkscreens (ours is of Frederick Douglass). He’s moved from portraiture to abstraction, but he still does some work in collage, which I confess is my favorite ;) The exhibition is up through July 11. Play hooky one afternoon and go.(The last painting is by Frank Stella, by the way — an influence on the artist, as you can see!)@imarhutchins @kreegermuseum

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)
