White teacup shaped stool or side table

Stool mania!

Annie Elliott | November 18, 2015

Holy cow: what is UP with stools right now?! From practical to useless to cute to downright kooky…there are a lot of stools out there. Choose wisely. (Brief public service announcement: You know about the 3 heights of  stools and chairs, right? “Table height,” “counter height,” and “bar height.” So if you’re buying a stool for …

Banned Books Week and the power of the library

Annie Elliott | October 4, 2015

As you may know, Banned Books Week just ended. The week got me thinking about libraries — in particular, my hometown library in Glens Falls, New York. When I was in middle school, my best friend Emily and I would end the school day, hop on our bikes, and ride to Crandall Library downtown. For me, the library wasn’t …

Bossy color hearts Anna French

Annie Elliott | July 12, 2015

I arrived home a few hours ago to an empty house. My husband and daughters are still in St. Michaels, where the girls will go to sailing camp this week. Usually I love chilling by myself at home; it’s so rare that no one else is here. But it was a really fun weekend, filled w/ amazing food, bike …

Summer, in color. My favorite colorful things for the outdoors

Annie Elliott | June 22, 2015

Do you hear that, Gentle Readers? No? Exactly. It’s the sound of summer. My daughters finally got out of school last Friday, we had their birthday parties (please note the plural; no shared party for THESE twins), and on Saturday, we drove them to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they’ll spend the week with friends. Last night, …

Hey, Millennials: home IS an experience

Annie Elliott | March 29, 2015

Jura Koncius just wrote a terrific article in the Washington Post about Millennials being more interested in experiences than in accumulating things for their homes. For this generation, nostalgia is in short supply. Koncius points out that it’s not that Millennials don’t care about their surroundings. They do. Newell Turner, Editor-in Chief of House Beautiful, says in the article …

5 ways to spruce up your beach house for summer

Annie Elliott | March 22, 2015

And by “beach house,” I mean summer house, cottage, country house, weekend house, or year-round house :) I’m just so desperate to think about warmer weather…I’d like to make every house feel summery right now. 1. Do a massive cleaning (even if you have a housekeeper). Whether we’re talking about the home you live in year-round or a house that’s been …

Lighting by Jamie Drake and AERIN. An exercise in fabulousness.

Annie Elliott | March 11, 2015

Designing light fixtures can’t be easy. If it were, wouldn’t everyone be doing it? Scale alone is a tricky thing. Then you have to consider where it might go, create the design, choose finishes…then — goodness! — there’s wattage to think about, and probably something involving wiring… It seems complicated. Which is why we all should appreciate truly …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
