Well-priced art: Gillian Klein reproductions

Annie Elliott | November 12, 2008

Gillian Klein’s work caught my eye at an art show in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square a while ago. (I’d misplaced her card, and thrillingly, it just resurfaced.) She paints moody, steamy streetscapes in both muted and vivid palettes. This is “Flatiron District:” And here’s “Midtown Sunset:” The longer you stand in front of one of these …

Foolproof floor lamps

Annie Elliott | October 28, 2008

Recessed lighting isn’t always the answer to a poorly lit room. Just as “Once you win a price, it’s yours to keep,” “Once you punch a hole in your ceiling, it’s there forever.” Or at least until you spend more money closing it up. Strategically placed floor lamps can work wonders in a dim space. …

What to hang at the end of a hallway

Annie Elliott | October 21, 2008

Art. (You knew that was coming, didn’t you?) I touched on this subject in an earlier post about enlivening dreary hallways. In that case, though, there was wainscoting to deal with and very little light…in other words, we had bigger fish to fry before we could think about art. But speaking of big fish, that …

Pueblo Revival Survival Strategy #2: Homey

Annie Elliott | October 14, 2008

When faced with “Pueblo Revival” architecture, an alternative to a traditional Southwestern interior is the homey approach. This Santa Fe guest house is comfortable but elegant, distinguished by an airy interior and a fabulous art collection. As with Survival Strategy #1: Contemporary, the walls and ceiling are light in color. Note, though, that here they’ve …

You asked…about John Robshaw pillows

Annie Elliott | September 27, 2008

I love it when a client makes a great suggestion. I felt unjustifiably but undeniably proud when a client asked me whether I thought these John Robshaw pillows would work in her living room. YES! Yes they would! The colors are terrific, and I love the birds – a perfect cross between elegance and whimsy. …

What a difference a frame can make

Annie Elliott | September 16, 2008

This lovely watercolor was completely lost. The whitewashed frame and sickly matte didn’t set off the picture at all…everything just floated away. (The matte likely faded in the 50 years since it was done, but that frame…well, I’m sure it was the height of fashion at one time.) We changed the outside matte to a …

You asked…about downsizing, and mixing antique and contemporary

Annie Elliott | September 11, 2008

Q: Love your blog. Please give some pointers to downsizing seniors….We don’t want our new apt. to look institutional and have loads of world treasures to display… Two questions: 1. We have the option of opening up walls to create more open space. Will this make our new apt. home feel larger or is it …

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper

Don’t let your porch be a throwaway space! Make it a room. Get a high quality indoor/outdoor rug. Make sure your furniture is COMFY. Find a cordless lamp (they’re everywhere now!). Hang art! You can even add a vintage console table or cabinet if you’re ok with it weathering over time 🕰️. #interiordesign #porchdesign
