What a difference a frame can make

Annie Elliott | September 16, 2008

This lovely watercolor was completely lost. The whitewashed frame and sickly matte didn’t set off the picture at all…everything just floated away. (The matte likely faded in the 50 years since it was done, but that frame…well, I’m sure it was the height of fashion at one time.) We changed the outside matte to a …

What’s in your bathroom?

Annie Elliott | September 15, 2008

Here’s what’s in the restroom of a DC restaurant called Proof. Check out this shiny metallic wallpaper. How amazing is it that the geometric pattern of the wallpaper is imitated in the mosaic tile below it? And when you really get close, you see that the wallpaper Xs are actually women’s legs, in fishnets and …

Welcome home, library! (Wall St. Journal article)

Annie Elliott | September 13, 2008

The Weekend Journal had an interesting article about home libraries yesterday. The title and sub say it all: “Why Libraries Are Back in Style – It’s Not Because of Books; They’re ‘Memory Rooms’ or TV-Free Private Spaces.” First, let me gag at the phrase, “memory room.” Ok, that’s done. It’s a good article, and I …

You asked…about downsizing, and mixing antique and contemporary

Annie Elliott | September 11, 2008

Q: Love your blog. Please give some pointers to downsizing seniors….We don’t want our new apt. to look institutional and have loads of world treasures to display… Two questions: 1. We have the option of opening up walls to create more open space. Will this make our new apt. home feel larger or is it …

Best of bossy’s colors #4: Wedgewood Gray

Annie Elliott | September 10, 2008

Blue is back. Gray-blue is better. For a sophisticated greyish-blue that’s deep but not depressing, check out Benjamin Moore‘s HC-146 Wedgewood Gray. I’ve used it in several baths and bedrooms, but I’m dying to try it in a dining room. It’s so versatile it’s almost a neutral.

You asked…about curb appeal

Annie Elliott | September 9, 2008

Q: We’ve lived in our house for 4 years now. We have 4 children and most likely will move to a larger house next Spring. Can you give us some ideas about how to create some curb appeal? We are willing to paint and do some landscaping. BTW, used the Ivory Tusk for the walls …

The importance of good tile installation, or, I’m in love with the tile man…

Annie Elliott | September 8, 2008

…and my husband doesn’t mind. Tile installation can make or break a project. Inexpensive tile painstakingly installed will look elegant, and a sloppy job will make the most expensive tile look cheap cheap cheap. Not the look you’re going for. When you combine lovely tile with expert installation, this is what can happen: When I …

Let’s talk about what fabric doesn’t work ❌ for the sectional upholstery in this beach house TV Room. Even though these fabrics are beautiful on their own… they don’t work here. The dark stripes were not lighthearted enough and the smaller scale blue and white pattern was too predictable. Watch to listen to me plead my case for lavender and green! 🏖️#interiordetails #colorfulinteriors #beachhousedesign

Here’s the challenge: Imagine you are designing a lighthearted, summer beach house. In the TV Room, there are bookcases, a neutral rug, and a large sectional. What upholstery would you put on the sectional?Comment your pick before you see part 2 👇#designchallenge #interiorsandhome #interiorinspiration

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration

Q: What is one thing you can do to elevate a room❓💬 The first thing you see when you walk into a room needs to look great. In your office, get a nice, big vintage desk. In a living room, paint all the walls a dark color. Avoid satin brass hardware, pills on sofa fabric, and fake wood!#interiordesign #dcdesigner #decorinspo

This will come as no surprise, but I think about window treatments a LOT. Especially during the transition from winter to spring, with the change in temperature and light…I’m reminded what a critical design element window treatments are. And then I get to thinking about window treatments through the ages. Who invented drapes? Did the Romans *really* invent Roman shades?I decided to do some digging. Check out my blog to see what I discovered!📸 @stacyzaringoldberg📸 @jennverrierphoto#windowtreatments #drapes #interiordesign

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! Today we feature Brunschwig & Fils’ Les Touches. @brunschwigfils introduced Les Touches in 1965, and the pattern soon became a Brunschwig classic. (Interestingly, “touches” translates to “keys” or “strokes…” I guess that’s close to “dabs,” which is what I’d assumed.) According to handwritten records, Les Touches is inspired by post-WWII black and white photographs, but the connection between this inspiration and the pattern remains a mystery. Referred to most often as a stylized animal print, Les Touches is a staple of the Le Jardin Chinois collection.Today, Les Touches comes in 18 colorways, but the blue colorway remains iconic. I’ve used Les Touches for window treatments and upholstery, but I can’t wait to try it as wallpaper!

Here’s what ✨ I ✨ would do… Instead of matching everything, you balance it. Pull one color. Shift the scale. Let each piece do something different. Let’s talk about what fabric doesn’t work ❌ for the Roman shades in this teenage girl’s bedroom with 2 big windows and a statement ceiling. Even though these fabrics are beautiful on their own… they don’t work here. Biggest mistake: repeating the same motif (moths, butterflies, etc.) across the room. It starts to feel themed instead of designed.Watch part 1 for the full context, and watch part 3 to find out what I would choose.#interiordesign #wallpaper #interiorsandhome
