How to style a rectangular dining room table

Annie Elliott | April 29, 2024

This blog post is called “multitasking,” Gentle Readers. Except that I don’t believe in multitasking. So let’s call it “killing two birds with one stone.” Except that I like birds. Sigh. You get the picture. I don’t know why I thought I’d be able to squeeze in a photo shoot amongst all the client deadlines* …

How to furnish a mid-century modern house…with Ikea?

Annie Elliott | April 15, 2024

The timing was almost spooky, Gentle Readers. John and I have received permission to start spiffying up his mom’s weekend house, which was built — mostly with his grandfather’s own two hands — in the middle of the 20th century. Mid. Century ;) (You can read a little more about the house in last fall’s …

My thoughts about “the most defining pieces of furniture” according to The New York Times

Annie Elliott | March 31, 2024

The New York Times had such an interesting article recently, Gentle Readers. It’s called, “The 25 Most Defining Pieces of Furniture From the Last 100 Years.” The word “defining” is problematic, of course, so the subtitle attempts to clarify: “the most enduring and significant objects for living.” The title did NOT include the overused word, …

3 new things I learned at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House

Annie Elliott | March 11, 2024

If you’re reading this blog, Gentle Readers, chances are you know a thing or two about Frank Lloyd Wright and his Prairie School architecture. The horizontality, the echoing of nature via earthy colors, and Wright’s penchant for designing of interior furnishings as well as the house itself. So this post isn’t a Frank Lloyd Wright …

How to layer rugs as safely as possible

Annie Elliott | February 26, 2024

A TikTok viewer recently asked how to layer rugs without creating a tripping hazard. The unfortunate truth, Gentle Readers, is that there is no way to layer rugs 100% safely. In fact, experts evaluating older people’s homes for safety generally suggest removing ALL of the rugs. Now, this can be a great look, especially in …

Making the most of a small space

Annie Elliott | February 11, 2024

Hello, Gentle Readers! I hope you’re surviving the doldrums of winter. Punxsutawney Phil is optimistic that spring is imminent, but I have my doubts. In any event, in a true celebration of winter, John and I went up to New England recently. He skiied, I mostly worked, but we also visited a friend’s small cabin …

Gray is out, greens are in. Hooray!

Annie Elliott | January 28, 2024

Pantone’s color of the year for 2024 left me so uninspired that I didn’t even blog about it, Gentle Readers. That’s sayin’ somethin’. There were a few people who, upon learning of my apathy, asked, “But isn’t that the color of your living room?” “Um, NO, thank you very much,” I would answer. “My living …

Let’s talk about what fabric doesn’t work ❌ for the sectional upholstery in this beach house TV Room. Even though these fabrics are beautiful on their own… they don’t work here. The dark stripes were not lighthearted enough and the smaller scale blue and white pattern was too predictable. Watch to listen to me plead my case for lavender and green! 🏖️#interiordetails #colorfulinteriors #beachhousedesign

Here’s the challenge: Imagine you are designing a lighthearted, summer beach house. In the TV Room, there are bookcases, a neutral rug, and a large sectional. What upholstery would you put on the sectional?Comment your pick before you see part 2 👇#designchallenge #interiorsandhome #interiorinspiration

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration

Q: What is one thing you can do to elevate a room❓💬 The first thing you see when you walk into a room needs to look great. In your office, get a nice, big vintage desk. In a living room, paint all the walls a dark color. Avoid satin brass hardware, pills on sofa fabric, and fake wood!#interiordesign #dcdesigner #decorinspo

This will come as no surprise, but I think about window treatments a LOT. Especially during the transition from winter to spring, with the change in temperature and light…I’m reminded what a critical design element window treatments are. And then I get to thinking about window treatments through the ages. Who invented drapes? Did the Romans *really* invent Roman shades?I decided to do some digging. Check out my blog to see what I discovered!📸 @stacyzaringoldberg📸 @jennverrierphoto#windowtreatments #drapes #interiordesign

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! Today we feature Brunschwig & Fils’ Les Touches. @brunschwigfils introduced Les Touches in 1965, and the pattern soon became a Brunschwig classic. (Interestingly, “touches” translates to “keys” or “strokes…” I guess that’s close to “dabs,” which is what I’d assumed.) According to handwritten records, Les Touches is inspired by post-WWII black and white photographs, but the connection between this inspiration and the pattern remains a mystery. Referred to most often as a stylized animal print, Les Touches is a staple of the Le Jardin Chinois collection.Today, Les Touches comes in 18 colorways, but the blue colorway remains iconic. I’ve used Les Touches for window treatments and upholstery, but I can’t wait to try it as wallpaper!

Here’s what ✨ I ✨ would do… Instead of matching everything, you balance it. Pull one color. Shift the scale. Let each piece do something different. Let’s talk about what fabric doesn’t work ❌ for the Roman shades in this teenage girl’s bedroom with 2 big windows and a statement ceiling. Even though these fabrics are beautiful on their own… they don’t work here. Biggest mistake: repeating the same motif (moths, butterflies, etc.) across the room. It starts to feel themed instead of designed.Watch part 1 for the full context, and watch part 3 to find out what I would choose.#interiordesign #wallpaper #interiorsandhome
