Annie Elliott | January 18, 2026

Happy New Year, Gentle Readers! 2026 is going to be OUR YEAR! It’s going to be amazing! As the kids say, We’re manifesting that [stuff]! As we approach the end of January, I’m feeling extremely grateful for the clients and projects we have right now. We’re working on renovations of historic houses (below, the lighting …

It’s that time of year, Gentle Readers! The fall edition of High Point Furniture Market, a 5-day extravaganza during during which 75,000 interior designers from around the world visit 2,000 exhibitors in a small town in North Carolina. It’s nuts. High Point makes it easy to spot interior design trends for the coming year. Here’s …

Gray is out, greens are in. Hooray!

Annie Elliott | January 28, 2024

Pantone’s color of the year for 2024 left me so uninspired that I didn’t even blog about it, Gentle Readers. That’s sayin’ somethin’. There were a few people who, upon learning of my apathy, asked, “But isn’t that the color of your living room?” “Um, NO, thank you very much,” I would answer. “My living …

Are separate bedrooms becoming more popular?

Annie Elliott | October 29, 2023

I thought it might have started during COVID, Gentle Readers. You know, when isolation was de rigueur. The slow appearance of that double line – or sometimes even the onset of a sniffle – would result in banishment, the offending spouse sent to live in the guest room…or basement, or home office with a pull-out …

Interior design trends for 2024 – as seen at High Point

Annie Elliott | October 16, 2023

I always look forward to the High Point (NC) Furniture Market, Gentle Readers, but this year was especially rewarding. My colleague Amy and I were STRATEGIC! We did not mess around. With surgical precision we visited the showrooms on our list and kept our eyes peeled for new resources. We cracked the code on our …

Final interior design trend seen at High Point!

Annie Elliott | October 27, 2022

Wrapping up this series, Gentle Readers! Our first five trends were: light wood, natural materials, curved furniture, bouclé upholstery, and 1980s revival (heaven help us). Here’s the final interior design trend we just can’t ignore, much as we’d like to. Trend #6: Pastels, especially mauve There’s still a lot of white and gray out there …

The most controversial interior design trend at High Point (Part 3)

Annie Elliott | October 26, 2022

Quick review! Trends we’ve seen so far are: light wood, natural materials, curved furniture, and bouclé upholstery. Here’s Trend #5 of 6! Trend #5: 1980s revival Describing the interior design style of the late 1970s/early ’80s is difficult, but to paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, you know it when you see it. First, there …

Happy Independence Day! I happen to love a room decorated in red, white, and blue. It’s not always gimmicky; wouldn’t you agree that the dining room below is bold and sophisticated? 🤪 My advice: vary the shades (clash those blues if you have to!), throw some large-scale patterns into the mix, and add texture. A grasscloth ceiling, for example 😉 Have a great 4th, everyone!#interiordesign #homedecor #pattermixing

I was honored to co-chair — with the inimitable @ianthainteriors — the design competition, America at 250: The New Look of American Design, a project conceived by the nonprofit MADE: In America.Design students from Howard University partnered with Washington Design Center showrooms to create storyboards and vignettes reflecting their vision of “American style.” The Design Center is showcasing the students’ work through July 10; admission is free and open to the public. Details may be found at the link in the @washingtondesigncenter’s bio.I encourage you to visit! It’s so important to support the next generation of designers, and I was delighted to participate in this event. Iantha and I are grateful to James De Lorbe, Chairman of MADE: In America; and we extend our warmest thanks to jurors @melissacolganinteriors, @mariella.cruzado, @gaildavisdesigns, @val_hawkins_architect, @hadleykeller, @byronrisdon, and @jazmynedesignstudio.

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! This week’s guest star: Schumacher’s Birds & Butterflies. It’s so whimsical, yet so grown up! Creatures on wallpaper can be a tough sell to adults, but Birds & Butterflies’ black and white background is quite sophisticated. (That’s why the Multi on White is my favorite colorway. I wouldn’t bother with the others.)The pattern is derived from a hand-printed 1960s wallpaper in the Schumacher archive. It’s certainly earned its place in the Exuberant Prints collection, don’t you think?#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #roomdesign

Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room.
