How to choose a sofa that looks fabulous in your space

Annie Elliott | July 10, 2022

I don’t have to tell you, Gentle Readers, that buying a sofa is a BIG DEAL. Unless you have a wonderful interior designer to guide you (ahem), it may be helpful to know a few things about what kind of sofa will look best in your space. The most important thing when purchasing a sofa …

Is your outdoor space ready for summer? Don’t forget the art!

Annie Elliott | May 30, 2022

I don’t know about you, Gentle Readers, but I am SO ready for the school year to be over! Trying to keep track of 2 sets of graduation-related events and two post-COVID-infection teenagers making up for lost socializing time…it’s exhausting. (We’re all fine now, by the way – thank you for your well wishes!) On …

Don’t miss this trend! Fabulous furniture in mixed materials

Annie Elliott | August 8, 2021

I know, Gentle Readers: “mixed materials” isn’t entirely new. We’re used to seeing lucite with glass, metal with wood, mirror and wood… And two-toned desks certainly have been around for a while. This one is wood and vellum, with a touch of brass on the pulls: And here’s a deskd in wood and marble with …

It’s time to upgrade your home office

Annie Elliott | October 19, 2020

Oh, Gentle Readers. What are we, 7 months into this pandemic? I hope you’re holding up ok. At first, working from home was novel. If you didn’t have a dedicated home office, you set up where you could: kitchen table, lap desk in the living room, wherever. And that was ok. But then we realized …

Who Doesn’t Love a Makeover?

Annie Elliott | June 21, 2020

Thank you, Gentle Readers, for tuning into my House Beautiful live tour last week! If you missed it, you can still see it on this page. I’m so grateful for your support! I’m in more of a picture mood than a word mood today, so I thought I’d bring out some before and after pictures …

Top 3 Interior Design Trends for 2020 from High Point Market

Annie Elliott | October 22, 2019

High Point. That’s all you have to say in the interior design world and everyone knows what you mean: the semi-annual, 5-day, 2,000-manufacturer, 12-million-square-foot, 75,000-attendee furniture market for trade professionals. In High Point, North Carolina. I love High Point. We generally go in the fall (we just got back), but I’m thinking we may have …

Top 3 Decorating Trends from High Point

Annie Elliott | October 23, 2017

I have to tell you, I have never wanted to dye my hair black more than I did at High Point this year. I’d say 80% of the people there were blonde. Crazy! There’s a sociology thesis in there somewhere… When I wasn’t seeing myself coming or going, my fellow Bossettes and I noted three …

Get ready for a dramatic before and after! We transformed a playroom into a dining room, and the result is pretty amazing. (But still fun!) #wallpaper #interiordesign #diningroominspo

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss the chinoiserie wallpaper in the Great Hall at @citytavern_dc in Washington, DC. Ooooohh - field trip!I was delighted to visit City Tavern recently. It’s a historic 1796 Federal building in the heart of Georgetown, and all the cool kids hung out there. You know, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson…those guys. At one point, the building boasted the largest room in Washington.I, of course, was captivated by the Great Hall, which is covered in @graciestudio hand-painted wallpaper — which was selected by none other than Jackie Kennedy! EVEN THOUGH at that time the building was a club that didn’t admit women. Harumph. The chinoiserie walls are gorgeous from far away, but they’re amazing up close, also: you can see faint brushstrokes left by the painters. Doesn’t that give you a shiver? I love it.

For a recent article in @vogueliving, I was asked how to mix wallpapers — either in the same room or adjacent rooms. I have a few pieces of advice to offer 😊See my latest blog post for more…#interiordesign #designblog #wallpaperinspo

Happy Independence Day! I happen to love a room decorated in red, white, and blue. It’s not always gimmicky; wouldn’t you agree that the dining room below is bold and sophisticated? 🤪 My advice: vary the shades (clash those blues if you have to!), throw some large-scale patterns into the mix, and add texture. A grasscloth ceiling, for example 😉 Have a great 4th, everyone!#interiordesign #homedecor #pattermixing

I was honored to co-chair — with the inimitable @ianthainteriors — the design competition, America at 250: The New Look of American Design, a project conceived by the nonprofit MADE: In America.Design students from Howard University partnered with Washington Design Center showrooms to create storyboards and vignettes reflecting their vision of “American style.” The Design Center is showcasing the students’ work through July 10; admission is free and open to the public. Details may be found at the link in the @washingtondesigncenter’s bio.I encourage you to visit! It’s so important to support the next generation of designers, and I was delighted to participate in this event. Iantha and I are grateful to James De Lorbe, Chairman of MADE: In America; and we extend our warmest thanks to jurors @melissacolganinteriors, @mariella.cruzado, @gaildavisdesigns, @val_hawkins_architect, @hadleykeller, @byronrisdon, and @jazmynedesignstudio.

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! This week’s guest star: Schumacher’s Birds & Butterflies. It’s so whimsical, yet so grown up! Creatures on wallpaper can be a tough sell to adults, but Birds & Butterflies’ black and white background is quite sophisticated. (That’s why the Multi on White is my favorite colorway. I wouldn’t bother with the others.)The pattern is derived from a hand-printed 1960s wallpaper in the Schumacher archive. It’s certainly earned its place in the Exuberant Prints collection, don’t you think?#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #roomdesign

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world.
