And Pantone’s official color of 2009 is…

Annie Elliott | January 6, 2009

…14-0848, Mimosa! (Thank goodness for that last part – “Mimosa” is so much catchier than “14-0848.”) There are many color trend predictors out there, but Pantone really is the authority on this stuff. Here’s its reasoning in a nutshell: Mimosa embodies hopefulness and reassurance in a climate of change. Hmmm…follow politics much? Hope? Change? All …

Skinny Georgetown house in The Washington Post

Annie Elliott | January 3, 2009

In case you missed it – this being a travel-filled holiday week and all – The Washington Post had a fantastic article in Thursday’s Home section about an 11-foot-wide house in Georgetown. (Mysteriously, the online version omits the photographs, so I’ve included them here. Photo credit for all is Kevin Allen.) The owner of the …

You asked…about farmhouse colors

Annie Elliott | December 31, 2008

Hello,Ive enjoyed reading your blog. My fiance and I bought a farmhouse in New England (4000 sf!) in dire need of affection…It has a beautiful foyer with 20′ high ceilings and adjacent great room. We would like to do a warm gold color, not too yellow and not too tan. I have swatches of several …

Holiday story – Hearts/Darts

Annie Elliott | December 23, 2008

Sheila is a journalist from the Pacific Northwest. In her amusing and informative blog, “From the Storage Room,” she runs a feature every Monday called Hearts/Darts: nice and naughty nuggets from across the country. I couldn’t resist sending something in this week, so take a look if you have a sec. Warning: it is in …

Metropolitan Home’s Nisi Berryman on using strong colors

Annie Elliott | December 17, 2008

I was riding the Metro yesterday, catching up on my magazine reading (I can barely keep up with Domino), and something in the December ’08 issue of Metropolitan Home caught my attention. In a recurring side article called, “What the Pros Know,” Miami designer (and Met Home’s Miami City editor) Nisi Berryman says this: “It’s …

If Stanley Kubrik opened a frozen yogurt place…

Annie Elliott | December 15, 2008

…it would probably look like Yogiberry. A friend wanted me to see it because she didn’t care for the interior and wanted my take on it. I hate disappointing my friends, but I thought the space was very clever. Her complaint is that it’s cold and sterile, that it isn’t a place you’d want to …

Domino book party at Mitchell Gold

Annie Elliott | December 12, 2008

Yesterday, 5:05 p.m.: Wrap up meeting. Start getting excited about book party at Mitchell Gold celebrating The Book of Decorating, a Domino Magazine venture. 5:10: Bid Virginia client a fond farewell. Feeling good: had convinced her to use some strong colors for her new kitchen, possibly Benj. Moore‘s AF 290 Caliente or AF-405 Thicket on …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
