You asked…about so-hideous-it’s-almost-great metallic bathroom wallpaper

Annie Elliott | October 5, 2009

Hi Annie,I have just moved into a room in a rented townhouse. The good news is that the room is quite large at 19’ by 12’ and has three nice-sized windows. The bad news (part 1) is that the bath is wallpapered in this so-hideous-it’s-almost-great wallpaper, which has a silver geometric pattern with a light …

Mitchell Gold: some favorites – especially sectionals – and prices

Annie Elliott | September 22, 2009

Happy last day of summer. I had the pleasure – nay, the privilege – of spending some extra special time with one of my daughters recently, because her school started, get this: two and a half weeks after her sister’s. Unfortunately, our babysitter’s school started when daughter #1’s did. We read books. We went to …

You asked…about MORE colors for bedroom/bath suites

Annie Elliott | September 11, 2009

The Gentle Reader who sent in the previous question also wondered about the colors in her guest bedroom and bath suite... Annie – The guest bathroom is near the guest bedroom and although I wanted it to harmonize, I also wanted a little more drama for this bathroom. The pedestal sink, water closet, tub and …

You asked…about paint colors for a bedroom/bath suite

Annie Elliott | September 8, 2009

Hi —I live in Naples, Florida, and purchased a new condo when I moved here 8 years ago….My issue relates to paint for the master bedroom/bath. Master bedroom is a good size. Presently painted Penny (Ben Moore’s 2163-30), but I’m not happy with this color–too orange looking. I want to repaint the bedroom Clinton Brown, …

Girls’ bedroom makeover, with Aura paint

Annie Elliott | April 26, 2009

My daughters had been asking me for a pink room for months. (They’re 4-1/2: pink isn’t just a color, it’s a way of life.) I loved their gender-neutral yellow and light blue room, but it’s been 4 years since we’ve moved in, and some rooms have gotten more paint attention than others…It was probably time …

You asked…about bath “builder’s beige” (blech)

Annie Elliott | February 24, 2009

Hi Annie, I love your blog and read it religiously since discovering it via Washingpost.com. I have a question I’m hoping you can answer. I moved into a relatively new house about a year ago (it was built in 2003), and while the master bath is very spacious, it has very generic “builders beige” tile …

I was honored to co-chair — with the inimitable @ianthainteriors — the design competition, America at 250: The New Look of American Design, a project conceived by the nonprofit MADE: In America.Design students from Howard University partnered with Washington Design Center showrooms to create storyboards and vignettes reflecting their vision of “American style.” The Design Center is showcasing the students’ work through July 10; admission is free and open to the public. Details may be found at the link in the @washingtondesigncenter’s bio.I encourage you to visit! It’s so important to support the next generation of designers, and I was delighted to participate in this event. Iantha and I are grateful to James De Lorbe, Chairman of MADE: In America; and we extend our warmest thanks to jurors @melissacolganinteriors, @mariella.cruzado, @gaildavisdesigns, @val_hawkins_architect, @hadleykeller, @byronrisdon, and @jazmynedesignstudio.

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! This week’s guest star: Schumacher’s Birds & Butterflies. It’s so whimsical, yet so grown up! Creatures on wallpaper can be a tough sell to adults, but Birds & Butterflies’ black and white background is quite sophisticated. (That’s why the Multi on White is my favorite colorway. I wouldn’t bother with the others.)The pattern is derived from a hand-printed 1960s wallpaper in the Schumacher archive. It’s certainly earned its place in the Exuberant Prints collection, don’t you think?#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #roomdesign

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper
