High Point Market 2021: Winners and…Others (and a decorating trend or two)

Annie Elliott | October 18, 2021

Hello, Gentle Readers! I just got back from High Point Furniture Market, to which I hadn’t been for 2 years! It was more subdued than usual (fewer people, of course), but super fun and educational nonetheless.

Outdoor setting with colorful furniture
Woodbridge Furniture

If you’re not familiar with “Market,” as they say, here are some previous blog posts to fill you in: 2017. 2018, and 2019. It’s fun to go back and read those, actually.

Anyway, under the heading, “the more things change, the more they stay the same,” there were some familiar sights this year. Instead of focusing on trends, therefore, I thought I’d give you my Market winners and lose- I mean, others.

Best discovery for accessories: etúHOME

EtuHOME showroom - kitchen accessories and cutting boards
EtuHOME showroom - kitchen accessories and cutting boards
I mean…

Full disclosure: etúHOME happens to be doing an amazing collaboration with designer/influencer Colette Shelton, aka CocoCozy, who happens to be one of Amy’s best friends. But I promise you: this showroom would have stopped me in my tracks anyway.

Best discovery for case goods: Phillips Scott

Elegant traditional desk
Tall wooden china cabinet or bookcase
You could use this tall cabinet for books or dishes
They have beautiful headboards in several finishes – including painted!

Best chair for comfort: CR Laine, 8800 Series

Lounge chair with English roll arms
Ok, not quite fair since this is customized – if we wanted to, we could add a skirt, change the arm style, and, as with all CR Laine furniture, control the firmness/smushiness of the cushions ;)

Best chair for style AND comfort: Century Furniture, Minerva Chair

Fully upholstered chair
The Minerva Chair by Century Furniture
Woman sitting in a fully upholstered chair
You cannot BELIEVE how comfy this chair is. This one is upholstered in Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito, if you’re interested ;) (Hi, Amy!)

Best readymade pillows: Loloi

So many!
Pillow with appliqué alligator
Loloi has a great collaboration with Rifle Paper Co., too

Best trend: pencil rattan. It elevates the “natural materials and textures” look, which has been around for several years now.

Round pencil rattan coffee table with brass center
Coffee table by Celerie Kemble at Arteriors
Pencil rattan console table with peacock scrollwork
The Primrose Console Table at Jamie Young
Detail of curly rattan scrollwork
Don’t you love the detail?!

Most…intriguing showroom: Bold Monkey

Furniture showroom with purple wallpaper
The neon reads, “Gangsters Don’t Cry”
Gold alligator sculptures on table
I love that these guys come in two sizes. You know, just in case

Best color seen a lot: Green

Living room with green velvet sofa
Tasteful green at E.J. Victor

Worst color seen a lot: Citron

Chair in yellow-green velvet fabric
I love yellow, but not with so much green in it

And finally:

Most inadvisable item: fandelier. A fan inside a chandelier. Some people thought it was fabulous. I did not.

Fan inside a ring chandelier
Yep.
Two fandeliers
I have video.

There you have it, Gentle Readers! Another successful, fun, amazing, exhausting trip to High Point.

Hie thee to London! The exhibition, "Wes Anderson: The Archives" at The @designmuseum is worth the trip. His films are so stylish, and that’s due to no single element. It’s the combination of the settings, sets, costumes, props, actor selection, and dialogue that’s magic. As a designer, I’m inspired by Anderson’s careful curation of every item in every scene and his commitment to his artistic vision. Check out my new blog post for more thoughts about the show!

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! @schumacher1889 Queen Fruit, designed by Neisha Crosland. This stunning wallpaper was inspired by Mangosteen plants, a fruit native to the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Evidently, the gold-outlined flowers mimic a 16th-century English needlework bed hanging. Who knew?! Without knowing any of that ;) I used this wallpaper in the Lapis colorway in my own Dining Room. The metallic accents brighten the room, and because I’ve never seen a blue quite like this one (the field), I had to use it. The other two colorways are pretty interesting, too.#interiordesign #wallpaper #schumacher

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! Today we feature Strawberry Thief, by @williammorriscollection Recognize this pattern? It’s 140 years old, so I’m sure you’ve seen it somewhere. (Perhaps on the walls of the Atlanta coffee shop my daughter frequents!). William Morris was known primarily as a fabric designer when he designed Strawberry Thief in 1881-83. The story goes that he was inspired by the thrushes that stole fruit from his garden. It’s a nice thought, isn’t it?It’s unclear when Strawberry Thief began to appear on wallpaper, but boy am glad it did. The pattern is classic, cozy, colorful, and just all-around charming. I believe the Indigo/Mineral colorway is the OG, but, like every other manufacturer with an icon on its hands, today it’s available in several colorways. (I strenuously object to the horrific Miami Strip. What genius thought THAT was a good idea?)Strawberry Thief appears on merch from coasters (which I own) to footstools (which I selected for a client!). I don’t mind. As long as it’s also on wallpaper, you can put it on anything you like.

My wish list for 2026! 🌟1. Design another house with the gracious proportions and strong (not ornate) details of the 1910s and 1920s.2. Design a bedroom around a super tall headboard, à la Kit Kemp.3. Paint a room “Arsenic.”4. Find a fantastic resource for high-end bedding.5. Cover a living room in a low-contrast, small-scale wallpaper such as @Schumacher’s Burley in Straw.See my latest blog post for more!
