Skinny Georgetown house in The Washington Post

Annie Elliott | January 3, 2009

In case you missed it – this being a travel-filled holiday week and all – The Washington Post had a fantastic article in Thursday’s Home section about an 11-foot-wide house in Georgetown. (Mysteriously, the online version omits the photographs, so I’ve included them here. Photo credit for all is Kevin Allen.) The owner of the …

You asked…about updating your fireplace

Annie Elliott | November 6, 2008

Q: Annie, I have been reading your blog for a few months now and really enjoy it. I was hoping that you could help me pick a new look for my fireplace in Silver Spring [MD]. My family lives in a 1940s colonial. I like midcentury modern furnishings, a clean, neutral look, and silvertone or …

Pueblo Revival Survival Strategy #3: Minimalist

Annie Elliott | October 15, 2008

And for the final installment in the 2008 “Blogger at Large” series: minimalism is yet another viable tactic for coping with Pueblo Revival architecture. Everything belonging to the owner of this condominium – an absolutely delightful scientist at Los Alamos – is functional and attractive. (You’ll recognize DWR’s Cubitec shelving, of course, and the dining …

Pueblo Revival Survival Strategy #2: Homey

Annie Elliott | October 14, 2008

When faced with “Pueblo Revival” architecture, an alternative to a traditional Southwestern interior is the homey approach. This Santa Fe guest house is comfortable but elegant, distinguished by an airy interior and a fabulous art collection. As with Survival Strategy #1: Contemporary, the walls and ceiling are light in color. Note, though, that here they’ve …

Reupholstering is expensive

Annie Elliott | September 30, 2008

There. I’ve said it. Being bossy color is not always a fun job, but someone has to tell you the dirty truth. I’d rather you hear it from me than on the street somewhere. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t re-upholster that eccentric little chair; it just means you need to consider a few questions before …

Welcome home, library! (Wall St. Journal article)

Annie Elliott | September 13, 2008

The Weekend Journal had an interesting article about home libraries yesterday. The title and sub say it all: “Why Libraries Are Back in Style – It’s Not Because of Books; They’re ‘Memory Rooms’ or TV-Free Private Spaces.” First, let me gag at the phrase, “memory room.” Ok, that’s done. It’s a good article, and I …

You asked…about modern vs. traditional built-ins

Annie Elliott | March 7, 2008

Q: Our house is a four square, kind of arts and craftsy, and we are going to put in some built-in shelves and cabinets. [DC craftsman] Ted Ferris…has given us a couple of options. One is a traditional option in white lacquer with recessed paneled cabinet doors. The second option is in maple with flat …

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
