Happy summer (and some of bossy color’s favorite blog posts)

Annie Elliott | July 14, 2011

Dear Gentle Readers,

I apologize. I didn't intend to get out of the posting groove, but as you can see, it happened anyway. Rather than continuing to disappoint you every time you rush to your computer in excited anticipation of bossy color blog's next installment (I hope the gentle sarcasm is coming through), I am going to declare, officially, that bossy color blog is on hiatus this summer...

The 6 best decorating tricks for your rental (if you can’t paint)

Annie Elliott | December 14, 2010

Yesterday a friend asked me about another friend's rental apartment. It's a little sterile. She just moved in, doesn't know how long she'll be there.

"Is she allowed to paint?" I asked innocently. Because, well, duh.

"No."

"No?"

"No...."

You asked…about decorating a rental apartment (on a budget!)

Annie Elliott | November 3, 2010

Hi, Annie. I'm sure you have suggestions for amazing things that can be done in an urban rental apartment without a ginormous budget. Right?

I moved in almost a year ago, and while I like to think that I have good taste, I haven't really been able to put together a cohesive design/feeling for the place.

In some ways I'm not sure where to start...

Final postcard from Miami: Light as design element at Grass

Annie Elliott | February 3, 2010

We woke up today to, what, about 5″ of snow? Believe it or not, that makes me feel better about not still being in Miami. If it’s going to be cold, then it might as well snow and be beautiful, too. Just a quick post about the minimal yet brilliant design elements at Grass Restaurant …

Mitchell Gold: some favorites – especially sectionals – and prices

Annie Elliott | September 22, 2009

Happy last day of summer. I had the pleasure – nay, the privilege – of spending some extra special time with one of my daughters recently, because her school started, get this: two and a half weeks after her sister’s. Unfortunately, our babysitter’s school started when daughter #1’s did. We read books. We went to …

Akron’s fancy bathroom. Who knew?

Annie Elliott | July 27, 2009

This is why bossy blog readers rock. You knew I’d want to see pictures of the bathroom in the hotel you stayed in on your potentially-inadvisable-because-you-have-2-small-children-but-ok-in-the-end road trip to see your relatives in the Middle West. This is exactly the kind of stuff I dig. (The bathroom, not the road trip.) The Gentle Reader in …

Don’t get rid of that lamp…change the lampshade instead

Annie Elliott | July 15, 2009

I’ve given you my from-the-heart advice about lamps. You know the saying: you don’t regret the things you do…you regret the things you don’t. Now, with equal fervor, I implore you: if you have a lamp you don’t like anymore, DON’T GET RID OF IT. At least not yet. Try changing the shade first. A …

Happy Wallpaper Wednesday! This week’s guest star: Schumacher’s Birds & Butterflies. It’s so whimsical, yet so grown up! Creatures on wallpaper can be a tough sell to adults, but Birds & Butterflies’ black and white background is quite sophisticated. (That’s why the Multi on White is my favorite colorway. I wouldn’t bother with the others.)The pattern is derived from a hand-printed 1960s wallpaper in the Schumacher archive. It’s certainly earned its place in the Exuberant Prints collection, don’t you think?#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #roomdesign

Before and after part 2: a NYC pied-a-terre part deux! In this video we move to the primary bedroom, guest bedroom/office/workout area (remember: it’s NY! Gotta maximize your space!) and the tiniest powder room in the world. Such a fabulous, fun project!Mentioned:@Schumacher_midatlantic@leejofa@visualcomfort@fornasetti#interiordesign #wallpaper #nycdesign

There’s no other word for it: Sheila Bridges’ pattern Harlem Toile De Jouy has become an American icon. Iconic and ironic: the pattern conflates her experiences as a Black woman living in Harlem with pastoral motifs from 1700s French toile. Delightful and lighthearted at first glance, the pattern gives you plenty to think about. Bridges created Harlem Toile as a wallpaper but later expanded the collection to include fabric, bedding, plates, glassware, umbrellas, and clothing. I strongly recommend getting a piece of this pattern any way you can. @harlemtoilegirl#interiordesign #harlemtoile #patterninspo

“Much of the wallpaper [in the Victorian era]—fabric, too—was made with arsenic,’ explains Elliott. ‘There are worse ways to go, I suppose.’”I loved speaking with @allisonpduncan @vogueliving about the art of using two wallpapers in one room. Pink, light yellow, and gold-y tan combine to create a soft, unexpected color palette. The quiet colors are sophisticated together, and the palette will age beautifully as this tween moves through high school and college. (Her parents won’t even have to redecorate if it becomes a guest bedroom someday! But one step at a time…)#homedesign #paintinspo #bedroomdesign

Deep down, I believe that a house isn’t a home without wallpaper 😊 My latest blog post identifies five unexpected places you can use wallpaper — and some are small! Wallpapering the space behind your island stools could be your gateway to my favorite home furnishing. If you have other creative spots for wallpaper, I’d love to hear about them!#wallpaperinspo #interiordesign #wallpaper

Welcome to my new before-and-after series! 🥰 I take you through my thinking as I design a space — my “process,” as it were. Pretty pictures are involved too, of course. I hope you enjoy it!This was a super fun project: a historic townhouse with the challenge of a loooong shoebox-shaped front room. You know the kind. Here’s how we made this color-and-pattern-loving client’s challenging space amazing. Like this series? Please let me know! #interiordesigner #windowtreatments #wallpaper
