You asked…about upholstery, of course!

Annie Elliott | October 4, 2008

dear Bossy,i’m in need of some serious bossing around if you’re in the mood. got four chairs (dirt cheep) to reupholster for use with a bridge table in my mom’s living room. sorry i don’t have a photo of the table. it’s wood in a bamboo style, square with a leather top inset. (two of…

Reupholstering is expensive

Annie Elliott | September 30, 2008

There. I’ve said it. Being bossy color is not always a fun job, but someone has to tell you the dirty truth. I’d rather you hear it from me than on the street somewhere. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t re-upholster that eccentric little chair; it just means you need to consider a few questions before…

You asked…about downsizing, and mixing antique and contemporary

Annie Elliott | September 11, 2008

Q: Love your blog. Please give some pointers to downsizing seniors….We don’t want our new apt. to look institutional and have loads of world treasures to display… Two questions: 1. We have the option of opening up walls to create more open space. Will this make our new apt. home feel larger or is it…

Go Tar Heels I: Black and White Hallway

Annie Elliott | September 2, 2008

I was wandering around Chapel Hill, NC this weekend, and I popped into the Carolina Inn. It’s a lovely place, decorated exactly as you would expect: floral upholstery, formal drapes with swags, needlepoint rugs, antique reproductions…all in all, a tasteful if predictable scheme for a “historic” inn (it was built in 1924). As I rounded…

Bizarre yet potentially awesome laptop chairs

Annie Elliott | July 21, 2008

Given that I’ve pinched a nerve huddling over my laptop in the family room, roasted my thighs working in the car (as a passenger, thank you), and came precariously close to drowning my keyboard with a glass of wine – not to mention suffering a near-electrocution when I tried to slurp it up – here…

You asked…about rugs and art

Annie Elliott | July 14, 2008

Hi Annie, I’m going to apologize in advance because this question is somewhat similar to one that you answered in February, but if you bear with me, the ultimate problem does differ. I am working on decorating the living room in my new apartment and just purchased a sofa (leaf green) and a chair/ottoman (paprika);…

ACKC: licking the tables is optional

Annie Elliott | May 18, 2008

I almost licked a table on Thursday. I pulled back at the last minute, but it was a close call. It all began with a simple quest for ice cream. Ridiculous, since I don’t even like ice cream very much, but it was a gorgeous evening, and dinner at the dive-y Great Wall – Szechuan…

Window treatments don’t have to be fabric, of course. My favorite non-fabric window treatments are natural woven Roman shades, which are made of bamboo or natural grasses. They’re terrific alone, but they also look great as a first layer, under drapes.

How great do they look under these green drapes? 😍

As your friend, it is my duty to tell you: **you must have some wallpaper in your home.**

Choose your paper first — or 2 papers, so you can compare costs. Then I STRONGLY recommend bringing in a professional hanger to tell you how much of *that particular paper* you’ll need. The amount depends not only on the size of the room, but also the scale of the design, the fragility of the paper (to allow for mistakes), and how the rolls are packaged. Manufacturers literally cannot make it more confusing!

If you see a lamp you like, BUY IT. You will never be sorry. You WILL find a place to put it.

The hard truth is that you may not know whether a lamp will work in a certain spot until you try it. It may not be the place you originally had in mind. It may not even be in your current house. But you will find a great place for it, somewhere, someday.

Natural woven Romans can tone down the formality of a room... and they work in modern or classic interiors, as you can see ;)
