Accent wall checklist. You asked about it, kind of.

Annie Elliott | March 30, 2010

Hi Annie, I know that you aren’t particularly fond of accent walls,* but my husband wants one in our family room! Our kitchen opens up into the family room. We have white cabinets and we are painting the walls in the kitchen Benjamin Moore’s New Providence Navy. In the family room, three out of the …

Podcast about paint brands and “colors of the year:” Colorbudz II

Annie Elliott | March 22, 2010

A few weeks ago, did I mention I was doing a Podcast with some fellow color professionals? Well, it’s up! Lori Sawaya is the brains behind the operation. Lori writes the blog ColorStrategies and is known as FunColors on Twitter. She’s also a full member of the IACC and I happen to be starting their …

House Beautiful’s Stephen Drucker, with Celerie Kemble and Jamie Drake: Career-changing advice and a whole lotta fun

Annie Elliott | March 11, 2010

Lectures are crapshoots. You never really know how they’re going to be. Even if the featured speaker is super famous – sometimes especially if he’s super famous – he could… decide to talk about himself rather than the promised topic, or he could be an uncharming egomaniac (I like the charming kind), or he only …

Bossy color’s living room, Part 8: Paint

Annie Elliott | March 8, 2010

Rug, check. Drapes, check. Sofa, check. Upholstered chairs, check. Enough to move forward with a paint color, I’d say. I started by putting up about 12 paper paint swatches from Benjamin Moore. 2 of each, on different walls. From there I narrowed it down to 5, which I put on several walls. These were the …

You asked…about colors (colours, actually) in Canada

Annie Elliott | March 2, 2010

Hi Annie, I came across your blog awhile back and I love it! My boyfriend and I bought our first place here in Canada last April and have been struggling with a colour for our kitchen/dining/living area ever since….the current shade [of green] is Benjamin Moore’s Wind Chime. Unfortunately, I absolutely hate it… Now I …

You asked…about a color for your built-in bookshelves

Annie Elliott | February 23, 2010

Hello! We just added some built in bookcases and window seat to our dining room. We love them and now we are on to the painting stage – this is my problem. I am a fan of white. Not so with my husband. My husband would like to do something other than white – but …

You asked…about making a new sofa WORK!

Annie Elliott | February 9, 2010

Where to start? I recently bought a new couch (The Bailey Sofa from Boston Interiors in tan-ice blue) for the living room in my condo. Looking at the couch in the showroom and examining the swatch at home, the fabric seemed quite neutral. I thought it would be an easy switch with my old taupe …

I was thrilled to attend Imar Lyman’s exhibition opening at the Kreeger recently! I’ve loved his work for years and am lucky enough to own one of his silkscreens (ours is of Frederick Douglass). He’s moved from portraiture to abstraction, but he still does some work in collage, which I confess is my favorite ;) The exhibition is up through July 11. Play hooky one afternoon and go.(The last painting is by Frank Stella, by the way — an influence on the artist, as you can see!)@imarhutchins @kreegermuseum

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)
