5 unexpected places to hang art

Annie Elliott | November 19, 2017

I went to the Transformer Gallery‘s annual auction and party last night (bossy color helped sponsor the event), and it was SO MUCH fun! Today my feet hurt (4″ heels will do that) and I’m a little hoarse from yelling over the music, but my soul is full. You know why? Because the whole night …

5 things I would buy from the latest Ballard Designs catalog

Annie Elliott | September 19, 2016

(Don’t worry – more kitchen reno. updates coming soon!) ‘Tis the season to be inundated with fall catalogs. I’m going to be honest with you: I don’t usually read them. There are just too many, and if I want to browse, I browse online. That said, every once in a while I pick up something …

Hey, Millennials: home IS an experience

Annie Elliott | March 29, 2015

Jura Koncius just wrote a terrific article in the Washington Post about Millennials being more interested in experiences than in accumulating things for their homes. For this generation, nostalgia is in short supply. Koncius points out that it’s not that Millennials don’t care about their surroundings. They do. Newell Turner, Editor-in Chief of House Beautiful, says in the article …

5 ways to spruce up your beach house for summer

Annie Elliott | March 22, 2015

And by “beach house,” I mean summer house, cottage, country house, weekend house, or year-round house :) I’m just so desperate to think about warmer weather…I’d like to make every house feel summery right now. 1. Do a massive cleaning (even if you have a housekeeper). Whether we’re talking about the home you live in year-round or a house that’s been …

That edgy color combo, green and gray

Annie Elliott | October 26, 2014

I feel like I’m seeing green and gray (aka grey) everywhere! From excellent designers… In catalogs… Everywhere! I smell a trend. I wasn’t sure what I thought of the green/gray combo at first. But it’s grown on me. There may be a green and gray room in bossy color’s future sooner rather than later. What …

Have an ugly wall vent? Hide it in plain sight with a gallery wall

Annie Elliott | September 22, 2014

Wall vents are the bane of my existence. I’m being a little dramatic, but not much. They can be SO HARD to work with! You have a gorgeous, unbroken wall, just waiting for the right paint, or wallcovering, or piece of art, and then…THE VENT rears its ugly head. One of my favorite ways of …

Small painting hung on bookcase

Go ahead: hang art on your bookcases

Annie Elliott | September 7, 2014

I think hanging a big old painting on the front of a bookcase is one of the most elegant looks around. [photo deleted] There’s more than one way to hang art on bookcases, of course. (Notice that I didn’t say, “right or wrong way,” which shows amazing restraint.) My favorite style is layered and casual — almost …

My wish list for 2026! 🌟1. Design another house with the gracious proportions and strong (not ornate) details of the 1910s and 1920s.2. Design a bedroom around a super tall headboard, à la Kit Kemp.3. Paint a room “Arsenic.”4. Find a fantastic resource for high-end bedding.5. Cover a living room in a low-contrast, small-scale wallpaper such as @Schumacher’s Burley in Straw.See my latest blog post for more!

In our Wardman Park kitchen, I worked with the incredibly talented @billetcollins1 to create a hand-painted Chinoiserie backsplash on reverse-painted glass. It’s a mix of whimsy and craftsmanship; gold leaf for a little sparkle, and birds native to Maryland’s Eastern Shore as a nod to my husband’s roots.People always ask, “But how do you clean it?” Reverse-painted glass means you can Windex it like any other surface. Beauty doesn’t have to be precious ;)#annieelliottdesign #kitchendesign #chinoiserie #customart #interiorstyling #washingtondcdesigner
