Hello, Gentle Readers! I hope your new year is off to a great start. Thank you for your patience as I took an unannounced holiday break :)

As we took down the Christmas tree and put the furniture back in place, I thought about how many iterations our living room has had…and how other rooms in the house have changed not only in appearance, but also in function.
When we moved into our house 20 years ago, our infant twin daughters were sharing a room. (When they were born, they shared a CRIB!) It made sense for them to have the biggest bedroom in the house — half bedroom, half play space:

Of course we made little changes along the way as they got older. Beds instead of cribs:

And later, pink and green instead of blue and yellow:

When the girls started to mumble about wanting their own rooms, I thought, “Why should one of these tiny creatures have the largest room all to herself? My business is growing! *I* am going to claim the big room as bossy color’s world headquarters!”
So Georgie and I traded spaces. I took over the big front room:

And Georgie moved into my office. It looked like this when we first moved in, but don’t worry: I painted the whole room light blue pretty quickly:

This is how it looks now, as Georgie’s bedroom:

And Ruthie? Well, we had a small guest bedroom with grassy green walls (naturally I can’t find a picture, but it was super cute). We repainted it blue — I’m pretty sure we used the leftover paint from my office — with an orange ceiling, and Ruthie moved in:

It, too, was modified as she grew up. There was an AMAZING loft bed phase (I don’t have a picture of that either), but this is how her room looks today:

Ruthie selected the Manuel Canovas wallpaper, which I thought was a pretty sophisticated choice for a middle-schooler!
SO, Gentle Readers, the lesson is this: the rooms of yesterday don’t necessarily serve us best today. If your spaces aren’t working for the way you live now, it might be time for a change.
