Hello, Gentle Readers! I hope you’re surviving the doldrums of winter. Punxsutawney Phil is optimistic that spring is imminent, but I have my doubts.
In any event, in a true celebration of winter, John and I went up to New England recently. He skiied, I mostly worked, but we also visited a friend’s small cabin in the middle of the woods.
The comparison to Thoreau’s cabin is obvious:
But I argue that my friend’s cabin kicks Henry David’s cabin’s butt:
The cabin is a small but multi-purpose space. It’s a cozy little hideaway for reading, writing, napping…it’s pretty ideal, really.
I’m not suggesting that we abandon our normal-size homes and retreat to the woods. But I do think there’s an argument to be made for appreciating — and making the most of — all the space we have. Don’t you?
For a more “normal” small living space, Gentle Readers, check out this teeny tiny New York apartment I blogged about many years ago. It’s purple! And it’s genius.
