Go ahead: hang art on your bookcases

Annie Elliott | September 7, 2014

I think hanging a big old painting on the front of a bookcase is one of the most elegant looks around. [photo deleted]

There’s more than one way to hang art on bookcases, of course. (Notice that I didn’t say, “right or wrong way,” which shows amazing restraint.) My favorite style is layered and casual — almost messy:

You get this look by hanging large-ish pictures — often more than one — on bookshelves absolutely crammed with books. Books that are arranged by subject or author, not color or size.

It’s so library to me. So cozy. It feels authentic. [photo deleted]

That said, I think a more tidy look is beautiful, too — a single piece of art in front of books that are carefully arranged…

…or artwork on the face of a bookcase that’s carefully styled, with more objects than books.

Gentle Readers, it’s time. ⏰ Time to embrace the bold, the beautiful…the wallpaper. 🙌Nothing adds depth, drama, and jaw-drops quite like it. 💃 Wallpaper isn’t just decoration; it’s dialogue. It makes your walls whisper in velvet, chatter in chinoiserie, or shout in stripes. And yet, the myths persist. Let’s bust a few, shall we? 👊💰 “It’s expensive.” Doesn’t have to be. You can score fabulous rolls for under $50. Check online, check your local hardware store. Chic doesn’t have to be steep.😳It’s complicated.” It requires little math, but that’s why wallpaper experts exist. They calculate this stuff in their sleep.🙅‍♀️It’s permanent.” Absolutely not. Today’s wallpaper is commitment-optional. No steamers and razor blades required to remove it.Have I convinced you? Because I’m here to spread the gospel of good design, one roll at a time. 🌟 🫶🏻 With love and patterns, Your wallpaper-obsessed friend.......#annieelliott #annieelliottdesign #wallpaper #wallcovering #wallpaperdesign #wallcovering #wallcoveringdesign #interiorwallpaper #wallpaperstyles #interiorwallpaper #interiorstyling #interiorinspiration #interiorsandhome #moderninteriors #colorfullycollected #beautifuldesign

Styling a coffee table is like making the perfect martini—it must have a strong foundation, splash of color, and something extra. As Jennifer Aniston in Office Space would say: “a piece of flair.” 🍸Photo | @stacyzaringoldberg#annieelliott #annieelliottdesign #coffeetable #coffeetablestyling #interiorstyling #livingroomdesign #interiorsandhome #nyinteriors #colorfullycollected #livingroomdesign #livingroomsinspo

🖼️ Outdoor walls are the perfect opportunity to add a fun piece of art to your space. Why let blank walls go to waste when you can spice up the space? Whether it’s a quirky painting, a metal wall hanging, or a sleek stone sculpture, outdoor art adds personality, depth, and whimsy to your surroundings. 🍃 ......#annieelliott #annieelliottdesign #outdoorspace #porchdecor #outdoorart #artinthegarden #outdoordecor #wallart #artinspiration #exteriordesign #outdoorliving #outdoorspaces #creativedecor #decorinspo #homestyle #artforoutdoors #designtrends #artistictouch #outdoorvibes

We’re fully embracing @elledecor’s #cafecore trend in this cozy corner that’s practically begging for a cappuccino and a good book. ☕️Warm wood tones, inviting seating, and a charming @schumacher1889 Roman shade say it all: sit, sip, and stay awhile.Photo | @stacyzaringoldberg#annieelliott #annieelliottdesign #elledecor #interiorinspiration #interiorsandhome #beautifulinteriors #colorfullycollected #greenandblueinteriors #designtrends

Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you have to use small patterns! This @thibaut_1886 wallpaper really packs a punch in this tiny powder room, don’t you think? #bathroom #powderroom #powderroomwallpaper #thibautwallpaper #wallpaper #floralwallpaper

Your home should tell a story — your story. The places you’ve been, the pieces you’ve collected, what you love, and how you live. This is where designers shine. Our job is to help you weave your story into a design, creating a home that feels layered, lived-in, and uniquely you. ✨📸 | @angieseckinger#annieelliott #annieelliottdesign #curatedhome #designwithpurpose #uniqueinteriors #livedindesign #interiorsandhome

Table lamps do more than provide light: they bring much-needed visual interest – and sometimes whimsy! – to a room. The most important thing to remember: Tiny room or tiny surface = tiny lamp (15” tall or shorter); huge room = tall lamp (at least 27”H). If you’ve had a bare surface and add a lamp all of a sudden, give yourself a few days to adjust. It will look big at first, but trust me, it’s probably exactly the right size. 😊 📷 | @stacyzaringoldberg @mcbecks_pix @angieseckinger
