Show house! Part 1: Should we apply?

Annie Elliott | February 3, 2020

Hello, hello! As you may have seen on my Insta, Annie Elliott Design was selected to participate in the ASPIRE HOUSE, a designers’ show house, this spring!!! We’re so excited.

Cover, Aspire Design and Home Magazine
ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME went national in 2017. I’m not yelling at you: I just learned that the show house and the magazine name are in all caps ;)

ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME, a national style magazine dedicated to, well, to high home style, is sponsoring the project, and the beneficiary is Cancer Support Community, which is an amazing organization.

Corporate logo, Cancer Support Community nonprofit
CSC has been headquartered in DC for years, but they plan to open an actual service location here this year

Several of you have asked whether I’m going to blog about the process of preparing for a show house. Why, yes! Yes, I am.

I see that look of skepticism on your face. I admit it: I haven’t been the steadiest blogger of late. Sporadic. Unreliable. (Busy.) But this is important and fun, and frankly, I don’t want to disappoint you.

So here we go: an 8-part blog series, with a post every other week, chronicling the lead-up to the ASPIRE HOUSE.

Aspire House, May 2020

We first learned about the show house from Moki Media’s Sherry Moeller in October; she’s handling all of the publicity for the project. A walk-through for interested designers was scheduled for Monday, October 22. So we signed up, grabbed a tape measure, and drove out to McLean.

Show houses usually take place in homes that are for sale. Sometimes the houses already exist, but sometimes, as with this show house, it’s new-build. So this is what the house looked like when my Senior Designer Amy Beaupré and I visited:

Yep. 9,600 square feet of, “Use your imagination.” The esteemed interior designer Mary Douglas Drysdale was heading up the designer selection committee, so she and her Great Dane Clifford (he’s more of a pony, really), greeted us with in-progress floor plans, and off we went.

As we walked through the spaces, our first task was figuring out whether we even wanted to apply for a room. If we got in, the experience and exposure could be terrific — you might even meet your next client — but participating in a show house can be incredibly expensive and labor-intensive. I’ve known designers who have spent $40,000 or more, and that doesn’t include the hundreds of billable hours lost to sourcing, ordering, negotiating, installing, and staffing the house.

Second, we needed to determine what our ideal room would be. To apply, we needed to provide our top choices — but there’s no guarantee that we would be assigned the space we applied for. Theoretically, we could apply for the library and be assigned the butler’s pantry.

As we walked through the house, a vision began to take shape. This would be a spring show house. What about a sunny, inviting bedroom? What about soft colors and an abundance of patterns? What about a garden-y feel? What about creating a room that we would be delighted to spend time in?

The die was cast. Next time: the application process. Our design direction, our submission, and our strategy. And more interesting pictures, I promise ;)

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!

The star of today’s Wallpaper Wednesday is Farrow & Ball’s Lotus! The dramatic Lotus pattern is in the Art Nouveau style of the late 19th century and veeeeery early part of the 20th. (The pattern’s curved, stylized, botanical shapes are a classic indicator of Art Nouveau style.) Today, Lotus wallpaper is available in 19 colorways — or coloUrways, since Farrow & Ball is British ☺️ — and the metallic ones are quite spectacular. F&B changes its wallpaper colorways with annoying regularity; once they cease making a paper, that colorway is considered “archived.” But fear not: ANY F&B wallpaper pattern can be made in ANY F&B paint…all it takes is time and money. If you’re a Succession fan (I struggled, but I made it through), you may remember Lotus from Season 3, in Rava Roy’s foyer.#interiordesign #wallpaper

You know my thoughts about small rooms and wallpaper: bold, large-scale paper totally works! Your gateway drug is powder rooms. They’re the perfect place to experiment with whimsical patterns and bright colors because you don’t spend a ton of time in there. Although * I * argue that when you have the right wallpaper, you’ll want to ;)

When you come home after a long day, do you want your foyer to rev you up or calm you down? Decide which approach you need and run with it. Add large-scale wallpaper and layered rugs for excitement, or paint the walls off-white and be selective with your artwork and mirrors for calm. #foyer #homedesign #foyerinspiration
