Q: We just moved in a new condo, first place & all. and just painted the accent wall (which i know you hate) but the living area is open, so accent wall was the best idea.

now we’ve got the orange/red working as our accents.. but no idea what to do about a rug. I’m not sure since the couch is grey, the chair is a mix of grey/brown/green (depends what light you’re looking at). and the ottoman is leather brown….
Looking forward to your advice! ~erin~

A: I didn’t say I HATE accent walls, did I? I just ask that they be used judiciously. And I have to say that I think an accent wall IS appropriate for your space. Hmph.
Now that we’ve cleared that up, on to your rug. The furniture breaks down visually into blocks of earthy neutrals: the tan sofa, olive-y chair, brown wood tv stand. So let’s be bold and liven things up a bit. I’m thinking a patterned rug with several colors in it.
Angela Adams‘ Munjoy wool rug (right) is a great option. The lack of orange saves it from being too matchy-matchy, and the strong, regular pattern would underscore the contemporary style of the room.
If you want to take the edge off the living room, go for something wild. No one beats Anthropologie for crazy patterns. This is the Osaka rug in beige (right). The colors would b
e great, and the rectangular blocks of patterns give it some sense of order.
Finally, more serene but not boring (at least not to me) is Jonathan Adler’s Magic Carpet Rug (below).
I hope this gives you enough options, Erin. You might find an earlier post about rugs helpful, also. Good luck! (And no hard feelings about that libelous comment…)
