7 things I would totally buy at HomeGoods (and the definition of “bargain”)

Annie Elliott | January 16, 2023

Update 2.2.23: You may want to check out my interview in The Washington Post, in which I visit this very store!

Hello, Gentle Readers! The “Shop With Me” series on my TikTok has proven to be surprisingly popular, so I thought I would do a little version of it here.

I’ve been to HomeGoods, Ikea, HomeSense, Tuesday Morning, Target…suggestions welcome!

This will be the YAY! version, in which I show you only things I like. Nothing negative! As you can imagine, when I’m let loose in a discount retailer like HomeGoods, much of what I see is…not awesome. And it’s hard not to talk about those things. But right here, right now, I’m going to focus on the positive.

Okay! Here we go!

These ceramic lamps are great. They’re a versatile height at 28″, an interesting blueish color, the shades are cloth, and they even come with bulbs.

$199 for the pair

I’d definitely buy this large striped storage basket — especially for $25.

HomeGoods tends to be excellent for baskets

This pencil rattan tray table is adorable! You’d need the right room for it (or a screened porch), but I think it’s quirky and cool.

Normal HomeGoods price is $100, but it’s on sale now for $70!

I hate paying retail for sheets and towels, so I’m always on the lookout. I think these patterned sheets are quite sweet, and they’re 100% cotton percale.

$35 for a queen set

I really like this dipped-leg stool. It’s super cute, and it’s a great size. The 12″ diameter and flat top make it a great little drinks table, and the 19″ height makes it easy for a (slender) grownup to perch on it for a while. I wish it were a little less expensive (it’s 50 bucks), but if it’s nice and heavy, I think it’s worth it.

Didn’t I see stools like this at Serena & Lily?

You know how I feel about trays, and I think this one is so pretty. It’s fluted blue glass, not plastic, and it would be so cute on a dresser or long vanity top.

It’s only $13!

Finally, if you like kitschy holiday decorations, which I do, HomeGoods is MECCA! I especially like the ones that look handmade, like this…this…felt heart gnome string thing. I actually have one for Christmas ;)

I felt a close-up was warranted

There’s one important thing to keep in mind when you’re toodling around discount stores: the definition of “bargain.” A bargain is when you find something GREAT — good quality, attractive, and/or just plain awesome — for a low price. Just because something is inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s a bargain. Right?

Taupe lounge chair and matching ottoman
This chair and ottoman together are $399, but if you can feel corners of the wood arms under the upholstery — as I bet you can — it’s not a bargain

Just so’s ya know, things I tend to avoid at discount home stores like HomeGoods are upholstered furniture, large case goods (tables, cabinets), and fake flowers. And other stuff, but…you know…I’m focusing on the positive here ;)

I follow two rules when mixing patterns in the same space: vary the scale, and vary the subject.I was excited to share this and other insights on pattern splicing with @ericafinamore from @apartmenttherapy! #interiordesign #patternsplicing #patternmixing #designopinions #annieelliottdesign

It’s Wallpaper Wednesday! This week we’re featuring Deconstructed Stripe by Schumacher (in collaboration with Miles Redd). This pattern pays tribute to the legendary decorator Albert Hadley. Redd was inspired by Hadley’s contemporary, streamlined designs that played with scale and proportion. Deconstructed Stripe is impactful on its own but also looks INCREDIBLE next to other patterns.@schumacher1889 #designinspo #wallpaper #interiordesigner

I was thrilled to attend Imar Lyman’s exhibition opening at the Kreeger recently! I’ve loved his work for years and am lucky enough to own one of his silkscreens (ours is of Frederick Douglass). He’s moved from portraiture to abstraction, but he still does some work in collage, which I confess is my favorite ;) The exhibition is up through July 11. Play hooky one afternoon and go.(The last painting is by Frank Stella, by the way — an influence on the artist, as you can see!)@imarhutchins @kreegermuseum

It was an honor to be a sponsor of the 87th annual Flower Mart at the National Cathedral! My daughters have been trekking up to the Cathedral for this event since they were little - wonderful memories. This year, my favorite flower display was the Hong Kong Economic and Trade office; those peonies smelled UNBELIEVABLE! 🌺 🌼 🌷 🌻! Switzerland was a close second ;)

For today’s Wallpaper Wednesday, we discuss Hicks Grand by David Hicks. The British interior designer created the smaller-scale Hicks Hexagon in the 1960s and later scaled up the pattern to create Hicks Grand. The contemporary, geometric, honeycomb repeat adds intrigue and depth to any room. I have only used the smaller Hicks Hexagon (stairway picture), but I LOVE the scale of Hicks Grand. Fun fact: The Hicks Hexagon pattern was used on the rugs in the Overlook Hotel’ hallways in The Shining 😱#wallpaperinspo #interiorinspiration #hicksandgrand

Your house should reflect *you*. My recent visits to Eudora Welty’s house and the Mississippi Museum of Art reminded me of that. If the wallpaper you put up makes you happy, it’s a success! If you need help figuring out how to translate your personality and lifestyle into your home’s function and appearance, I’m here 😉.Read my new blog post for more!
