Woodley Park: A Wardman townhouse for an ever-changing family
This 1910 rowhouse is a “Wardman,” shorthand for the homes built by real estate developer Harry Wardman in Washington, DC in the early 20th century. This row Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington, DC has evolved over time to meet the needs of the family. Annie Elliott Design added built-in bookcases in the second floor family room. Originally painted white when the room was a play space for young children, the bookcases are now painted red to create a cozy, library-like family room with a fireplace and TV. The leather sofa is best loved by the family dog, who is unable to destroy it, despite her best efforts. Layered antique and vintage rugs give the room an informal feel. The living room is blush pink with an Oriental rug, green velvet sofa, mirror over the fireplace, and an ever-changing art gallery wall. The dining room is papered in natural wheat-colored grasscloth with high-gloss painted navy woodwork that includes the coffered ceiling. It includes a vintage Chinese-style cabinet and antique English sideboard. The kitchen has a Chinoiserie hand-painted backsplash featuring birds of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
